The "Sachin = greatest" movement started a sick system/culture of attacking top tier players from both from India and other countries. Now similar practices are being adapted for Dhoni as if his career can be prolonged by such propaganda, and this could continue for other top players as well by esp. targeting young ones who are perceived to be challenging their spot .... Of course, outside of India, no one probably cares for monikers of any of these guys or their status in India    .... Fortunately, we also have fans who can steer (or at least attempt to) the culture in a positive direction

Praise and criticism follow each other. The hype certain people created for him opened the door for the detractors as well. If someone claims he is a "once in a lifetime player" then people expect to see that.  If they don't, they will react strongly.   

 

Add to that he followed in the footsteps of a cricket superstar like Dhoni, and its not hard to see why...

 

A young player is better off like Shaw, hardly talked about with little hype or hate.
