that cannot be an excuse. Every batsman would come across such situations.   4 & 36(64 balls)  indicate that his were failed attempts at what he was doing.

Sure, but did you see any of his dismissals?  I suggest you do before passing judgement.

i watched them and this has nothing to do with what I stated. Every batsman in the team would have to  face such situations of quick scoring. For instance in the recent 1st test vs SAF,  India needed quick runs  in the 2nd inns.

Jadeja,Kohli & Rahane did their roles to perfection  & only Jadeja got out after scoring 40 of  mere  32 balls. If Smith could do any of these ,we can say that  he did his job. Only scoring 4 runs & 36 of 64 balls ( slow str:) means he was far off. In not every inns can a batsman take his own time  and build long  inns as he would like to. Quick scoring occasions too would come   and he needs to be upto the task.

T20 is the real deal. Test cricket is a dying breed and has no relevance.
