A better and more interesting thread would be could you field an Indian XI team that could take on and beat the named Indian XI tomorrow in the 2nd Test.

That's off-topic but to answer your question: From current players - "no"  (unless you think Ind has equivalent of Kohli-Pujara-Agarwal-Pant-Bumrah-Shami-Ishant in the reserves as you cannot pick these players again to beat the 11 they are already in)

By keeping the above players as core in the 11, and changing other slots, maybe you could select a better team!

Back to topic, intuitively, I had gone with Team A .... Objectively:

Batting

Top Order: Gavaskar-Mankad-Pujara vs. Sehwag-Gambhir-Dravid

  • Key opener: Gavaskar vs. Sehwag = Team A as Gavaskar holds the edge. Though Sehwag can be destructive
  • 2nd opener: Mankad vs. Gambhir = Par. Mankad held a few records. He is one of the pioneering ARs. Gambhir can poke but can play well too
  • Pujara vs. Dravid = Par. Pujara is a devil in India, while he won Ind a series in Aus. Dravid is solid and has won a test in Aus too

Result: Team A

4-5

  • Kohli vs. Tendulkar = Par, esp. in Ind and Aus
  • Amarnath vs. Ganguly =  Team A

Result: Team A

6-7-8

  • Pant vs. Laxman = Team B
  • Kapil vs. Dhoni = Par
  • Ashwin vs. Kumble = Team A

Result: Par

Batting: Team A (Gavaskar and Amarnath vs. Sehwag and Ganguly respectively. The remaining category was at par)

Bowling

  • Pace: Bumrah-Shami-Kapil vs. Srinath-Zak = Team A
  • Spin: Chandra-Ashwin-Mankad vs. Kumble-Bhajji = Team A

Bowling: Team A (Both pace and spin have depth. Chandra, along w/ Gupte, has the best avg overseas for an Indian spinner.)

Overall: Team A

Help for both batsmen and bowlers so no one is at a disadvantage and both have to play well to get desired results.

Venues:  Dharamshala, A.bad (new stadium) and Kolkata .... Adelaide, Melbourne, and Perth

The 12 for both teams are chosen so the teams have to play with that.

Team A has the edge .... Team B probably has more popular players. Many of them played together but could have underachieved as a team

Cricket is a game of condition

Dharamshal n Kolkata vs Melbourne n Perth massive difference. Why would u pick kumble n bhajji if its melbourne or perth and even chandra n ashwin. No one will play 2 spinners

For eg if its eden garden - pick rohit, azhar without a 2nd thought.....its where they become freaks

Conditons play a massive role in deciding who wins. Same ENG trashes us at home n we do same to them at our home. Atleast decide its a 3 match series in Indian conditions

Pathan is the 12th man so can be the 3rd seamer for Team B (1999-2009 team was not playing 4 seamers in general for e.g.. They will usually play Kumble) .... Team A has 3 seamers already (Bumrah-Shami-Kapil). But, Pandya can be the 4th seamer if required over one of the spinners (Ashwin for e.g.). There is Amaranth too.

Keep it simple, buddy! Don't overcomplicate things in a hypothetical scenario.

No Vishy in pre- 90 team? Was more consistent than Amarnath.  Another name over Amarnath would be Vengsarkar.

pre-90s also another name that comes to

mind is Kris Srikkanth the original innovator of Attacking cricket while opening but he was very inconsistent so maybe Mankad but pretty sure there has to be other openers ahead of Mankad

Amarnath was phenomenal in Aus, Pak, and WI .... that edges him ahead .... Vishy is, of course, good too

There was Vijay Merchant  ....  Mankad can bowl as well. He hit that 231 vs NZ and 184 in Eng.  Also picked up 8/52 and 8/55 vs. Pak and Eng respectively. Instrumental in giving Ind some of its early wins
