Transition of young indian fast bowlers; Troublesome

Dont compare with Pakistan or SL setup. What their selectors do is a result of poor planning or result of lack of choice and that's now how fast bowlers are groomed. They are usually picked when they are green, do good for a season or two and fizzle out quickly. There have been many examples of these so called tailunts who are over hyped by green brigade but end up retiring after playing 2 years.

 

Because they dont have enough time to grow into all round bowlers at the domestic level. If anybody comes though and does well for a longer period, its usually rare and because of the bowler and not because of their selection policy.

 

If a bowler is actually good, he will eventually come through even if he plays an extra season or two of domestic cricket.

The last thing Indian cricket would want is follow what happens in Pakistani cricket or how Pakistani selectors pick players.

 

India  ranked 3rd in test, 2nd in ODI and 3rd in T20i.

 

Pak is ranked 7th in Test, 6th in ODI and 4th in T20i.

The issue is complete lack of willingness to look beyond Bumrah, Shami and Ishant. The fall back option the TM have tried are Bhuvi or Shardul when Saini and Siraj should have been playing Tests.

 

In LOIs as well, someone like Prasidh Krishna should have got to play but they kept backing Shardul and Kaul. It's that utterly defensive approach when it comes to giving chances to younger players, which this thread rightly highlights.

 

On the ranks, with the current set of resources, we should be a dominant side in all formats and not be satisfied with bullying teams at home. That we used to do even in the 90s with perhaps 5% of the resources we have currently

ranking is good, however the point was do we have an effective system to groom the young quicks, the answer is no & hence our youngsters take time to understand the art of taking wickets, somehow it comes quite quickly in our neighbour’s young quick bowlers..

 

Avesh is a classic example, was touted as the next best bowler in the U19 days, has not yet found his way in the indian team, khalil did not have any stellar seasons etc.. lesser we say of nagarkoti & mavi the better.... shaheen, naseem khan start doing well in domestic matches & in the international arena the moment they arrive, that’s a point of concern for the future..

Usually India plays 3 proper pace bowlers in 11. Out of them Bumrah and  Shami can't be dropped. That makes it tough to groom bowlers  as we usually play against top test teams. If we start playing Ireland and Afghanistan then only we can see many debutants. Pakistan can play youngsters because their senior bowlers are not good enough. India's established bowlers are  very good and hence the opportunities to try new ones are less, unless we start playing weaker teams a lot.

The problem lies in not giving younger people chances against even weaker teams like SL Bangladesh who toured us recently.  Kohli is so desperate for cheap wins that he plays almost full strength bowling attacks vs these teams. 

Also tours to Zimbabwe are extinct these days so no more debuts of young players.  Pakistan usually tours Ireland Netherlands & Zim where they try out their young bowlers as well as batters. 

We had a tour scheduled in June July of both Zim & SL but that didn't happen.  So young players have to further wait I think.

I agree that Bumrah and Shami should not be dropped.

 

But why was Saini and Siraj not played when Umesh and Shardul got chances in tests ... that is my main issue. 

 

And Saini and Prasidh could have played quite a few ODIs.
