Axar Patel: 10

Guy makes his debut, picks 4 x 5WI, averages 10 with the ball, keeps runs tight, bowls with new ball and takes wickets, bowls with old ball and takes wickets and even showed some batting prowess at the end. What more can you ask for?

R Ashwin: 10

Had an average first innings of first Test, but then came roaring back. King of home series and even managed to get a hundred when the team needed it.

Rishabh Pant: 9

Proved yet again that he is the batsman you need in a crisis. Plays with an uncluttered mind and his keeping has improved leaps and bounds.

Rohit Sharma: 9

Played important knocks in trying conditions and home record continues to look fabulous. Laid the platform for our comeback

Washington Sundar: 7

Showed great capability batting in the lower middle order with good technique. Couple of ducks enclosed within couple of good unbeaten knocks, very unlucky to miss out on hundreds. Got limited bowling opportunities due to Axar and Ashwin's success

Mohammed Siraj: 6

Bowled well when given the opportunity. Consistently troubled batsmen with his pace and movement. Has had a good start to his Test career. Fielding needs to be improved and he needs to learn to get behind the line of the ball while batting.

Ishant Sharma: 5

Didn't have much to do in the latter part of the series, but bowled okay when given the opportunity.

Jasprit Bumrah: 5

Got some much needed rest during major parts of the series, tried very hard, but wickets didn't provide much assistance. We know he is a champion bowler.

Kuldeep Yadav: 4

With the emergence of Sundar as a batting allrounder, he only got to play one Test and bowled okay in it. Still a good third bowling option.

Ajinkya Rahane: 3

Played one important knock partnering with Rohit Sharma, but had a lackluster series with the bat otherwise. Bonus point for slip catching, which was very good.

Cheteshwar Pujara: 2

He was supposed to be the king of home conditions, but he has consistently become a stroke-less wonder now. His timing and placement have suffered over the last couple of years and this lets bowlers get on top. He would be mightily disappointed with the results of his batting in this series.

Shubman Gill: 2

He know that he is super talented and this series is just an aberration. Deserves to get more chances. He will be disappointed with how he was getting out LBW to the pacers early on.

Virat Kohli: 2

2 ducks in 6 innings for the captain and an average series otherwise with the bat. Even though the series was won, his captaincy was a little lackluster. Team selection for first Test was very questionable, gave prolonged spell to pacers in final Test letting England batsmen settle in. As we saw in the Australia series before this one, India can win matches even without him.

Shahbaz Nadeem: 1

Had a very poor Test match and deserved to be dropped. With the emergence of Axar and after Jadeja gets back fit, it is very unlikely that Nadeem will play any more Tests.

I would give Axar 9.5 [for earlier batting failures] and Ashwin 9.5 [was a bit impotent in the first test], agree with pant and rohit, would give sundar an 8 [bowling was poor, but I think he should be evaluated as lower order batsman], siraj seems about right, ishant's rating is good but I'd adjust to 4.5 [did well in first 2 tests, quite poorly in next two], would give boom 4.5 as well, kuldeep - 3 [not his fault, had almost nothing to do, but his bowling was insipid], all 4 batsmen deserve 2 [including rahane, his main job is to bat, and he was poorer than the others], would give nadeem 1.5 [was undercooked]

After factoring conditions:

A+: Conditions were not that easy to bat, therefore Pant for 3 50+ scores in 6 innings, many played at crucial junctures

A: Rohit & Sundar played their roles in the top and lower middle order respectively w/ 2 50+ scores each in 7 and 6 innings respectively

A-: Axar and Ashwin, who utilized the surfaces well to their advantage bagging tons of wkts. Axar got like 4 5-ers + 1 4 wkts haul iirc. Ashwin (a 100) and Axar (a 40 odd) also chipped in with the bat at crucial junctures

B+ to B-: The other bowlers esp. pacers for trying to make things work in such conditions (supposed to take a back seat to spinners)

C+ to C-: Gill, Pujara, Kohli & Rahane. Contributed with knocks here and there. Should have had a better series but would be happy to get this out of the way at home where others can step up too

D+ or lower: Nadeem
