@Global.Baba you seem to be finding various reasons to justify the timid & selfish approach of our top order batsman.

Are you trying to justify your own imagination of English players being "hacks"  by being blind to India's obvious issues?

I am not defending anyone’s approach, every time our top order especially top 3 has failed our lower order hasn’t done much based on history. We couldn’t chase 200 odd in a crunch game or even almost lost to Afghanistan.

It works for England but do our players have the ability for such sustained hitting with this approach?

For something like 2023 WC, following XI would be very good:

Padikkal/KLR (consolidator)

Shaw (dasher)

Gill (accumulator but can score quickly if needed)

Pant

Sundar/Jaddu (accumulator but can score quickly if needed)

SKY/Kishan

Hardik

Thakur

Axar/Rahul Chahar

2 pacers

Batting all the way to 9, and there will be 6 bowling options assuming Hardik is bowling. If not, we can play him as specialist bat and drop one of the batters and get in another AR

Yes the Indian batsmen have the ability & talent to match England. We are coming close to doing that in T20s & certainly can sustain that for 50 overs. The likes of Roy/Bairstow/Buttler/Stokes etc were not backed because they could score 100s/150s but because of the way they play. The centuries were the by-product, which came eventually. Mind you all of them were not made in a single series, they were backed & given the license to play freely. Their failures were accepted by the captain.

You seem to be believing Indian cricket cannot survive without top 3, which can never be the case. However, most important thing when & if new batsmen come in will be the backing they get based on how they play. If priority is 50 averages & landmarks, no youngster gonna survive.

Butler,Stokes,Bairstow all of them are playing since 2011/12

But certain posters here think they are newcomers and have been performing since their debut,it takes time to mature then follows confidence, these are confident bunch of cricketers they are confident about their ability,im somewhat on same page as the above poster, that Kohli, Dhawan don't have the ability to go berserk even a Rohit can't do it very early, but im sure someone like Kishan,Shaw,Samson are given a free lisecnce they too can inflict massive damage on opposition, given they are backed

Rohit &  Kohli aren't going anywhere till 2023.  Who are we kidding?  Best case scenario is Dhawan getting dumped along the way.  Sooner the better.

Rohit & Kohli will likely bash weaker teams to get to 2023, & we know Fans.  Although both would be ultimate budhhas by then.

Hopefully Kishan Shaw Paddikal get opportunities along the way.  Middle order is still decent I'd say.  Top 3 are our problem come WC coz they will be past it by then.

Lets see.. an opener who can score daddy hundreds when set and a top order batsman with exceptional skills while chasing...their replacements may not replicate this duos average or statistical heights but there should be good enough batting talent in India to reach atleast 80% of them.

Now lets consider another duo

Virender Sehwag-Dashing opener who can also give you 2-4 overs every match

Yuvraj Singh-Explosive middle order batsman who can also give you 6-8 overs a game with a few wickets

Can anyone in the current team do 50% of the above two players' role? Indian cricket will be better served if we look for selfless cricketers who are willing to take risks for the team rather than just drooling over averages and high scores
