Zeeshan Ashraf's underlying metrics are the least impressive . Nearly as unimpressive as Bishnoi.

Kuldeep gets big dip on the ball .

 

Vipraj has much more potential with the turn he gets at that pace and significantly more drift and dip as well 

 

Axar also gets a lot of drift and turn also for the speed he bowls at.

What is drift force exactly? How is it different from just drift or sideways movement before the ball pitches?

Regardless of the way it’s defined, I’m surprised that Axar tops the list in drift force by such a massive margin. Makes me question the whole stats.

Magnus effect I think. Axar bowls more side spin and actually undercuts the ball and that's why he gets lift rather than dip

Probably. But I’m wondering if they are simply basing it off the angle of the arm at the release instead of the sideways deviation over the reference release angle. Axar does have a more sideways arm release.

This is from ball tracking data .  Sorry for  sounding stupid but isn't deviation measured from the point the ball pitches ?

I think that’s the turn since they have it as a separate metric. 
Since they also have a separate dip metric, I think drift probably is the equivalent of swing that’s seen in seamers. 

Having said that, I’m assuming that there can also be additional drift after the ball pitches since after pitching the base angle of the delivery will change due to turn and there can be additional deviation in the air over that adjusted angle. 
 

Also, it’s confusing since they are calling it drift force instead of simply drift. So you never know.

 

Or may be they could be using it as the equivalent of the speed / force of any sideways drift, not necessarily the magnitude of drift

I think the initial release angle is projected and the actual point of pitching and the difference is used to measure lateral movement(swing/drift ) for bowlers 

 

I assume something similar is used to measure dip with release point , angle of release and release speed.

Yes so u mean drift measured at the point the ball pitches or the batsmen’s crease if it never pitches. That I agree. I thought u were saying from the point of pitching and onwards.

Nah nah. Nobody measures drift and dip post pitching AFAIK

Pathirana injures Parag on the arm. Had to take some time for recovery and then gets bowled the next ball by a 146k yorker.

Magnus effect will skid the ball no ? Rather than lift ?

Flipper is courtesy of magnus effect where it skids.

Undercutting/backspin on the ball causes the ball to lift.

 

Overspin to dip.

Are u sure ?

 

Overspin is used in Topspin, post which it bounces more after pitching.

 

Whenever I try undercutting the bowl..it skids. While overspin helps generating more bounce than usual.

 

Just like when we throw pebbles in water...we undercut it hence it skids

Yes but the reason it skids is because it pitches fuller than a ball with no backspin/undercut.

I think by drift force they probably are just measuring the speed of any drift. I don’t think that’s of any real use when looked in isolation

without the magnitude of the drift.


Its difficult to imagine that Axar gets more sideways drift by such a large margin compared to the other bowlers.

 

The only thing he has distinctly is his sideways arm release. Any drift in such bowlers should be measured after normalizing for that sideways angle.
