Indians moving up the ladder in policy making, journalism or bureaucracy have started thinking in their vernacular language and not in English. They are crying that there are no bureaucratic people like Sam Pitroda who think in English. First of all , it is not 1830s McCaulay days to call Indian languages “vernacular “ , the word itself is demeaning. What is wrong with thinking in mother tongue? I have studied in Kannada medium till high school and I think in Kannada and translate while speaking. It comes natural and helps thought process. Even mental Math , it is easier for me in my MT. It should build self confidence and esp in IFS and IAS that we get more people who think in their MT. 2. Indians now don’t know how to eat with knives and forks and are more confident eating their bare hands in public. Nothing can be more elite than this. Is this what they call Intellectualism?

I studied English medium all my life, I probably think in English most of the time (except while cussing), and speak reasonably well in multiple accents. But it is not a sign of my analytical skills, intelligence, morality or compassion. It is just the ability to speak one frikkin language. The vast majority of people I know who cannot speak English as well as I can are much smarter than I will ever be. The two abilities are not related. Why is a superior ability to speak Kannada or Tamizh or Marathi not a sign of intelligence? Fork and Knife? Decades ago, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar stood up to the Brits by "feeding" his tie, trying to show them that clothes do not define a person. Language does not define a person. He screwed up whatever reputation Baru has or whatever he wanted to convey through his interview. People like him probably don't realise but they give second hand embarrasement to most Indians ....even the ones who he thinks belong to ' his kind'.His kind is mostly dead.
