Women's Asia Cup 2008 India seek to maintain winning streak Nishi Narayanan May 1, 2008 The fourth edition of the women's Asia Cup gets underway in Colombo on Friday and for India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan this will be their first competitive tournament in preparation of the World Cup in Australia in 2009. New entrants Bangladesh, meanwhile, will be hoping they put on a decent performance. India, who have won all three editions of the tournament so far without dropping a game, are favourites and Pakistan and Sri Lanka are eager to end their domination "We have a strong batting and fielding department and the team comprises six allrounders," Shashikala Siriwardene, the Sri Lanka captain, said. "Our final target is to qualify for the Asia Cup final and win it." Bismah Maroof, the young Pakistan opener, expected to beat Sri Lanka and give India some good matches. Jhulan Goswami, the Indian fast bowler who was named ICC Women's Player of the Year, said she hoped the Asia Cup would give the younger players the confidence to play at the international level. "This is a great opportunity to be the four-time champions," said Goswami, who needs four wickets to reach 100 wickets in ODIs. "It's our first tournament after the Quandrangular Series last year and we are going to approach the World Cup step by step from now on." These three teams will use the tournament to gauge their Asian opposition at the World Cup and also take the chance to fix their own squads. India have gone with several Under-22 players, dropping 30-year old batsman Anjum Chopra. Chopra, who won a prestigious civilian award in India last year, has been in poor form for a while now, averaging 27.45 since January 2006. But the selectors have also recalled 30-year old left-arm spinner Neetu David, who had announced her retirement from international cricket two years ago. David has been brought in to replace younger spinner Preeti Dimri. Pakistan meanwhile retained most of the squad from the World Cup qualifiers, where they were beaten by hosts South Africa in the final. They dropped Nida Dar, who did not feature in any of the games in South Africa. Yet other newcomers, Shumaila Mushtaq, Almas Akram, Javeria Khan, have been given a chance to prove themselves in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka haven't played an international since the previous edition of the Asia Cup in December 2006. Seven from the current squad of 14 featured in that tournament in Jaipur. Bangladesh, who qualified for the tournament after winning the Asian Cricket Council tournament in Malaysia last August, have dropped Tajikia Akhter, who led them to victory, and have appointed Salma Khatun as captain instead. For them the tournament will be an opportunity to move up the ICC rankings, for right now none of their matches are official ODIs since they are not among the top ten sides. The Asia Cup is a high point in the subcontinent teams' calendar but the four sides will be mostly just relieved there is some cricket to play. India start of the tournament with a win with Raj scoring a century. Is she like the Sachin Tendulkar of the women's team? Sure seems like it

Raj leads Bangladesh rout Cricinfo staff May 2, 2008 India 250 for 3 (Raj 109*, Sharma 72) beat Bangladesh 68 (Seema 5-17, Goswami 4-18) by 182 runs Bangladesh received an unpleasant welcome to the Asia Cup as India trampled all over them in a 182-run rout in the opening game in Kurunegala. Offspinner Pujare Seema, who is yet to play an international, and fast bowler Jhulan Goswami shared nine wickets between them, bowling Bangladesh out for 68. Mithali Raj, the Indian captain, scored an attacking unbeaten century and added 110 with opener Jaya Sharma. Bangladesh used seven bowlers in trying to contain the run-scoring and the most economical was captain Salma Khatun who gave away only 30 runs in her 10 overs. A target of 251 was always going to be an uphill task for Bangladesh, but what may have been an even more daunting prospect was to face Goswami, who is currently one of the fastest bowlers in the women's circuit. In her second over she removed Shukhtara for two, in her fourth, Panna Ghosh, also for two and in her fifth, Shathira Jakir for 12 and Rumana Ahmed for 0 - all four bowled. Seema also took two in an over and wrapped up the proceedings in 31 overs. Sri Lanka 225 for 5 (Silva 76) beat Pakistan 129 for 8 (Mumtaz 33, de Alwis 2-30) by 96 runs Scorecard Opener Dedunu Silva scored 76 off 109 balls to take Sri Lanka to a convincing win over Pakistan in Dambulla. Her half-century stands with Chamari Polgampola and Shashikala Siriwardene allowed Sri Lanka to set Pakistan a target of 226. In reply, Pakistan crawled to 129 for 8 in 50 overs. Silva hit 12 fours in her innings and was run out in the 37th over after taking her side to 150. Urooj Mumtaz, the Pakistan captain, top scored for her side with 33 and Sajjida Shah was the only other batsman to score over 30. Left-arm spinner Suwini de Alwis picked up two wickets while Shiromala Weerakkody, Eshani Kaushalya and Polgampola took one each. India demolishes the Pakistan team today albeit the Pakistani team is very inexperienced. Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh as well.

India and Sri Lanka post crushing wins Cricinfo staff May 5, 2008 India 275 for 7 (Dhar 92*, Rawat 69) beat Pakistan 93 for 9 (Extras 33, Sultana 3-9) by 182 runs Scorecard Rumeli Dhar slammed a career-best 92 and the bowlers backed her up with a superb performance as India crushed Pakistan by 182 runs. This was India's third successive win in the tournament while Pakistan have lost all three of their games. After choosing to bat, India lost two early wickets but recovered through a 50-run stand between Asha Rawat (69) and Priyanka Roy and then moved into a position of strength as Dhar and Rawat put on 89 runs. Rawat remained unbeaten scoring at nearly a run a ball and with the help of some lower-order hitting from Amita Sharma and Jhulan Goswami took India to 275 - the highest total of the tournament. The Pakistan batting never got going and they lost their openers with the score on 5. Only two of their batsmen got into double digits as they laboured to 93 in their quota of overs with even that meagre total reached with the assistance of 33 extras. Three of the Indian bowlers sent down their ten overs with an economy-rate below one and Gouher Sultana bagged the Man-of-the Match award on debut with figures of 10-7-9-3. Sri Lanka95 for 2 (Polgampola 32*) beat Bangladesh 94 (de Alwis 3-13) by eight wickets Scorecard It was a day of one-sided encounters as Sri Lanka trounced Bangladesh by eight wickets after restricting them to 94. Bangladesh, fresh from their memorable triumph over Pakistan two days ago, were unable to repeat their performance as only two batmen, Shathira Jakir and Ayesha Akhter , managed to cross 20. Left-arm spinner Suwini de Alwis was the most successful bowler and she sparked a collapse, starting with the dismissal of Ayesha, as four wickets fell for one run and Bangladesh slid to 68 for 9. The last pair resisted for more than 14 overs and added 26 runs but Sri Lanka chased down the target with eight wickets and more than 30 overs to spare with the help of de Alwis and opener Chamari Polgampola.

Awesome stuff. I feel we should compete with Australia and England, where the Women's Cricket is more developed than in Pakistan & Bangladesh. Thanks Ludhianvi, for starting this thread. We are Indian Cricket Fans - of both the Men's and Women's teams. :D

true, hopefully it will be 4 years this time around. Sri Lanka seem like the only team that can pose some problems. Btw, here are some comparisons of the Men's team with Women's team. See if you guys can fill in the rest Mithali Raj --- Tendulkar Like Tendulkar, she can bowl leg-spinners as well. Gowswami-- pace spearhead , perhaps a bit like Lambu aka Ishant Sharma Interesting description of her on cricinfo: Jhulan Goswami is one of the youngest members of this Indian squad. Although not very strongly built, she bowls with a smooth, easy run up and has formed a strong new-ball partnership with Amita Sharma. Goswami's strength lies in the fact that she generates movement off the pitch when she lands the ball on the seam and is now the fastest female bowler in the world, bowling at 120kph. Such pace seemed unlikely when she used to play tennis ball cricket with the lads as a young teen. "They asked me to stop bowling at them and just go and bat. It was then that I made up my mind to bowl fast." That she did - and she's been helped by Dennis Lillee at the MRF pace academy in Chennai.

thanks for the update. Will there be a final at the end? It would be ironic if India keep on winning all these games and falter in one game.
