Captaincy KPI

I was curious to hear the response to this survey. I always thought team success was the only thing that mattered. We have cases such Bob brearley who were in the team just for their leadership. 

 

I keep hearing Rahane's awful performance. And it isn't great. But as an Indian cricket fan how does it matter to me if he gets me the wins.

Apart from my vote for Team's win record, another KPI that must be evaluated for a captain is how many players he spotted and allowed to develop to become a match winner. Something our beloved captain has failed miserably at despite a very impressive record for wins.

Among the options listed in the poll - batting average. 

 

Team W/L record is pretty much useless as a) it depends upon how good your team is (does not necessarily show what the captain achieved) - lead BD in Aus for e.g. and see the result, b) can be manipulated by creating helpful conditions and/or playing weaker oppositions more frequently 

 

Point b can influence batting averages too but it is the less bad option as you can at least see if a player is handling pressure at an individual level with captaincy responsibilities over a period of time (which is why never use unfiltered stats) 

 

Ranatunga, who was known as a street smart captain, has a negative W/L ratio iirc. Kohli has both the higher batting average and W/L ratio. More folks would be inclined to pick Ranatunga as the better captain based on watching him create a strong SL side. 

 

Similarly, Allan Border, who won 32 tests and lost 22, while Ponting won 48 and lost 16. Most fans will likely rate Border as the better captain.

A captain should be a great source of inspiration and a mentor. I would base the performance on ALL of following

 

• Number of young players he mentored to excellence.
• Number of times he inspired a mentally beaten team to victory
• W/L Ratio

He is an embodiment of selfishness. 

 

Why waste time, energy and risk reputation by betting on younger players when that time can be put for better PR and self-promotion?
