The total contribution of Kohli, Pujara and Rahane in the 1st Test in SA.

Kohli, Pujara and Rahane contributed a total of just 137 runs for both innings of the 1st Test in SA. In effect its just 6/137

 

Are you telling me that there is not a better trio out there that would contribute more than 137 runs for both innings????

 

Any combination of Hitman, Pancahl, Gill, Iyer and Vihari immediately come to mind and thats not even counting the ability of Vihari to relieve the bowlers with his spin bowling.

 

For starters, India probably score 400+ in the first innings and have more time to bowl SA out in the 2nd innings.

They are just blocking spots, doing nothing in the team for so long.

 

Rahane averages 32 over last 50 tests. Rahul on other hand was dropped for averaging 35 after 35 tests. Yes, it is right to drop KL, right to drop Mayank after two failures, right to drop Shaw, Vihari and Iyer also but when it comes to Rahane, an average of 32 over 50 tests is not bad enough to be dropped?

It was all a master strategy. If India had good middle order batsmen and we would have scored 400 in first innings and another 200/4d in second, then bowlers would not have had time to bowl SA out 

 

Kohli is a master strategist, you see. He knows exactly how much his middle order needs to score and not "over-score" to keep the opponents and TV viewers interested. They can't play boring one-sided matches where India is dominating, they need to add some spice to the game. Otherwise, sponsors will run away.

I would love to know how many centuries that Ashwin has scored in that time and his average compared to Rahane.

No its not.

 

Actually Kohli wants to win the test as it ensures his captaincy but also wants to win to cloud his performance and to do that, he has Rahane and Pujara in the team.

Ideally all-conditions Nos. 3-5 would be Vihari/Iyer, Gill/Iyer, and Sundar/Sarfaraz in my opinion. Some play spin well (Iyer), others handle pace + bounce well (e.g., Gill).

to be fair, ash's batting has declined quite a bit in the past 50 tests before showing some recent signs of revival. better to look at Jaddu in his past 30-40 tests. guy has a record equivalent to that of a pure batter.
