I see that you edited your post … How did you determine performance?

How do we determine performance?

Simple- Consistency, Impact, performance vs top teams, all conditions run scorer over a given decade.

That is a basic statement. Consistency is easy. All conditions, I am not sure unless you went by countries/regions (In Eng for e.g. conditions can vary depending upon season)

How did you determine top teams from the decades? What did you understand impact?

For e.g. below is a thread on Martin Crowe, who was rated as the best batsman from 1985-1991 by Cricinfo using their criteria:

On what factors per your analysis (unless it is a random list by looking at statsguru) does he miss out on your 80s list?

Your question was pretty basic one so the answer would be on same lines too.

Again, read cricket stories from past, follow stats, read the opinions of cricket fraternities all round the world, you will have all the answers for any of your questions.

Let us not suggest that we have logged in on a cricket forum for the first time and simply throwing five random names for a decade sample.

Oh so you want decade wise breakdown.

1980s decade is 1980-1989, not 1985-1991.

Crowe was very close but misses out from my list by just.

Yes, show your methodology … not an amateur list esp. if you want to talk about multiple dimensions (even if you had said it is based on averages or whatever it would have been acceptable as it is a criteria but you spoke about multiple dimensions)

Performance, not average. Performance includes several factors and it is a combination of all, not just averages. Yes, it will become subjective but there is no objective methodology to come up with.

Obviously, you could make a case for some names to be rated higher or deserve to be there and that is what this is about. I would like to have a discussion on that rather than just quoting on what basis those names were put in that list.

Also, for 60s and 70s, I feel I might have missed out on quite a few names as obviously I don't think our knowledge for that era is enough to conclude the best five but based on my reading, I have still managed to come up with these names.

Post that, I have tried to take all factors into consideration.

I am asking about your list … the methodology you used … what thought process went in when you made the list

Consistency

Impact

Performance versus top teams

Conditions

what weightage did you assign

Andy Flower who was a very good batsman is not there in your list. It is about best batsman, not best team's batsman right?

Best five batsman in a given decade...

Andy Flower had 2600 runs at 44 average in 1990s so he doesn't make it to top 5 batsman of 1990s.

And I couldn't find him in the 2000s list too.

Equal weightage.

Also add great knocks( it can be counted in impact too).

Define impact

Show a example of a decade wrt consistency, performance versus top teams, impact, and so on … Do a chart

Missed this gem

So a guy who topped on certain parameters on cricinfo in 5 out of 10 years (50% of the decade), misses out for reasons unknown  :hmm:

Conditions

Pitch

Both vary across the season.

Even in India conditions can vary depending on the season especially in North India. You have to factor these variables before comparing stats regarding impact, average and strength of opponents.

Op needs to factor it in.

This appears to be a dire misuse of statsguru

Yes everyone should follow your “method” of stats guru filtering to make Pujara the Greatest of all time.

who has scored the most number  of runs batting at no.3 in Australia in the 3rd and 5th innings after 2:33 PM “

yaay Pujara goat
