Is Prashant Kishor the most overrated person in Indian politics

Supposedly a "Poll Strategist", whatever that means. The media seems to be head over heels on this guy. They glossed about how he was the architect of Modi's win in 2014 and gave him undue credit. The fact is that Modi did not need him. Modi was able to win by an even bigger margin in 2019 without Kishor. BJP won many state elections after 2014 without Kishor. When Kishor teamed up with Modi opponents, some of them won on their own merit (Kejriwal in Delhi, Mamta in Bengal), while some others lost.

The media always forgets Kishor's flops. Cases in view:

  • He was the man behind the Congress-SP alliance in UP in 2017. SP was in power in UP and having an alliance with the Congress was a means to consolidate the so called "secular" vote. Result: BJP wiped out SP and Congress winning nearly 80% of the seats
  • He was the poll strategist for TMC in the Goa elections in 2022. Result: TMC drew a big anda, despite bringing in some former prominent Congress leaders, leading a high profile campaign, pouring money by the truckloads and even getting an alliance with local party MGP. Even AAP, after spending much less money, was able to win 2 seats.

Now, when anyone asks him about the Goa results, he keeps distancing himself from that disaster, but the fact is that he was wholly and solely responsible for that campaign.

In my opinion, Prashant Kishor is the biggest fraud going around different parties and claiming that he can make them win when in fact, he provides no value to those parties. But he seems to be the darling of the media, especially the English language ones.

What do you think?

He has pragmatic insights into regional Indian politics informed by history as well as the zeitgeist and can clearly lay out his thoughts in conversation. How well he converts all of that into a winning strategy consistently is up in the air for now.

Why does media need to remember his flops? If he is able to deliver 100% of times, he will be greatest mind in world ever.

Even few success in a decade of politics is gold for an individual.

The successes of those election results are not due to him. He has just built an incredible marketing machine aided by his media friends to create an impression that hiring him means that you are bound to be successful. Modi clearly saw this early when he decided to ditch this guy. Others are still getting fooled.

A real challenge for him would have been to make TMC successful in Goa, outside their familiar territory. Mamta winning in Bengal, Kejriwal winning in Delhi is not something unexpected. They are so popular in their home states that they were bound to win anyway.

That's the image you have in mind to declare him as useless. Clearly political parties don't think so.

Modi used his services in 2 elections. No other party has used his services in more number of elections, then how is Modi smarter than others in this case?

All you need is a good marketing engine to show hypothetical possibilities and good friends in the media, who also get some "leaked" blueprints so that they can run stories. It makes for a mutually beneficial relationship for media and him. Media embellisshes his credentials and he supplues them with inside scoops.

Modi used him in the past when he was working behind the scenes. After 2014, he started claiming that he was responsible for Modi's win. Modi discarded him after that because there was clearly no truth to it. Modi won many state elections afterwards and a general election with an even bigger margin.

I am not sure how you're making those assumptions.

You haven't seen how he works. You are just making guesses that he is useless.

Is there any reference to support that claim?

Modi winning so many elections after that doesn't change anything. He might or might not have helped team in winning the elections, but later results doesn't signify anything.

Do you think I am some political party insider that I will be privy to everything he is presenting? Of course, I am judging him by his results.

To give you an analogy, take a look at India's World T20 performance in 2020.

India lost to Pak

India lost to NZ

India thrashed Afghanistan

India annihilated Scotland brutally

India smashed Namibia

Do you think it was a successful campaign? They won 3 games very convincingly and lost only 2. Do you give kudos to team management and the team for the wonderful results?

It is the same here. Kishor was on the winning side, when win was a foregone conclusion. He was on the losing side when odds were stacked against him. In fact, results in UP (2017) and Goa (2022) were so disastrous that nobody was predicting such a bad situation for the side on which he was.

If you apply that logic everyone is fraud in cricket.

Team will win without XYZ player.

The media always forgets ABC's flops. Lost this game, lost that game.
