Can Harshal be a good option for #7 in T20WC22?

India has two options for the #7 slot:

  • A: Play a batting AR, who can bowl a couple of overs. Where the overs are shared with another batting AR in slotted in the top 7
  • B: Play a bowling AR, who can complete his quota. The batting AR slotted in the top 6 bowls if required

If India leans towards option B, the candidates include Harshal, Thakur, D Chahar, and maybe Sundar as he tends to bowl 3-4 overs (including in powerplay) but, at the moment, finds it difficult to be slotted in the top 3-4. India has also invested in Axar & Jadeja but they appear more like Asian conditions options.

As for Harshal, he opens batting for Haryana if I am not wrong. If he clicks, sloves the bowling puzzle as the team has a reliable middle to death over option, allowing the team to play a power play specific bowler as well.

If Harshal is at #7 (or #8 per the bowling combination), the team can have:

  • D Chahar or Shami or ... to bowl with the new ball (or even Sundar has be can bowl in PP)
  • Bumrah or Prasidh as multi stage bowlers
  • Umran for his pace and x-factor
  • A wicket taking spinner

I am going by the current form (past is past)

Harshal at #7 (or #8 depending on who is playing among the 4 bowlers, the team can have:

D Chahar at 7

Harshal at 8

Umran

Bumrah

A spinner

or

Harshal at 7

Umran

Bumrah

Prasidh or Shami or U Yadav or Bhuvi or  ...

A spinner

or

Sundar at 7

Harshal at 8

Umran

Bumrah

A spinner or a pacer

or ...

The key is if Harshal is given opportunities (as he is a leading candidate for death bowling) and if he clicks with the bat too (to know that he would need to be given opportunities)

PS assuming likes of Moshin will be drafted post T20WC22

As of now the attack wud be

  • bhuvi- all phase bowler
  • bumrah- all phase
  • harshal- middle-death
  • umran- middle over enforcer (spot not confirmed as of now)
  • Avesh vs deepak chahar vs Umran vs Left armer (last spot)

Spinner -

  • chahal
  • Kuldeep
  • Bishnoi (incase kuldeep is injured)

Yes, he can be an option if you don't have Deepak Chahar fit and also his form will matter. In T20s, you shouldn't really be bothered whether your no.7 is a proper no.7 or a slightly lesser than a no 7( like no.8). That should be fine as long as he can hit sixes or score 15 runs quickly.

With Harshal Patel at 7, it allows us to pick Ashwin or Kuldeep as second spinner rather than going with bits and pieces spin A/R option. It also allows us to go with four genuine pace options with the in-form and a permanent t20 member Bhuvi playing at 8.

Conclusion :-

1.We can use Harshal and Deepak Chahar at 7 and 8 either way in a 4 man pace attack. We can also use Harshal and Bhuvi at 7 and 8 in a 4 man attack.

2. We can use Harshal at 7 and this allows us to pick Ashwin or Kuldeep as second spinner and not Axar or Washington who are bits and pieces. Deepak Chahar's fitness and his hunger for winning matches for his team looks doubtful to me.

Bumrah and prasidh new ball. Bumrah and Natrajan death. Prasidh middle overs.
