Slowly but surely (and have to say a bit unexpectedly as I have followed tons of such events), the T20 world cup excitement is catching on ... Anyways, let's look at the past major multi-team events in Aus (and Aus-NZ where applicable):

1985 World Championship of Cricket (ODI)

  • SF1: Ind v NZ, winner Ind
  • SF2: Pak v WI, winner Pak
  • F: Ind v Pak, winner Ind

* The team chasing won all the knockout games.

1992 ODI World Cup

  • SF1: NZ v Pak, winner Pak
  • SF2: Eng v SA, winner Eng
  • F: Eng v Pak, winner Pak

* The team batting first won 2 out of 3 knockout games. Pak chase v NZ in SF1 was made possible by a brilliant knock by Inzamam.

2015 ODI World Cup

  • SF1: NZ v SA, winner NZ
  • SF2: Aus v Ind, winner Aus
  • F: Aus v NZ, winner Aus

* The team chasing won 2 out of 3 knockout games. Aus posted a mammoth total versus Ind, which couldn't compete.

Notes:

  • NZ made it to all the knockouts
  • Ind, Pak, & SA made it to 2 knockouts
  • 3 different winners
  • Aus started off badly in the first event of each competition that it hosted, while winning the 2nd event (2nd ODI WC hosted in 2015)

Key Thoughts/Questions

  • Opportunity for NZ to enter its 4th knockout in a row in Aus (and Aus-NZ where applicable)
  • Will the pattern of Aus doing badly in the first event it hosts continue? (This is the first T20 world cup in Aus)
  • Chance for a first time winner in Oceania (Ind, Pak, & Aus have already won on this continent)

Should be interesting

1992- Inzamam

1985- Kris Srikkanth and Shastri

2015- Steve Smith

except for 85 shows that classy all format batsman are needed in clutch situations and not hacks. Also 2015 qf m.o.m was Rohit.

good takeaway :)

Unfortunately no, if my voice reaches Indian cricket, BCCI is going to be land of milk and honey :)

BCCI already swims in milk & honey.

Would be interesting to know what takeaways  were you looking for on a “recap” thread?

better to check last 3/4 BBLs and find some takeaways on pitches and conditions

This thread is not in BBL. This is on major world tournaments in Aus-NZ!

Let’s stick to the topic which could include talking about your favorite moments, performances, stat, patterns, etc!
