After 2019 WC, why Iyer and Pant got chances ahead of SKY or Samson?

Been 3-4 years now so don't remember well but just trying to understand the Indian cricket situation right after the 2019 WC semi final debacle.

 

A lot was written on India failing to figure out their no.4 batsman even though they tried a lot of options like Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Vijay Shankar but nothing worked.

 

KL Rahul who was seen as backup opener was trying to establish himself in ODIs around the same time and with Dhawan getting injured he ultimately went back to opening. Pant was finally introduced at 4 straight in the World Cup.

 

But after WC'19 with Dhawan back, the top 3 stayed as it was- Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli. Pant being the youngster and seen as future keeper batsman after MSD was backed at 4 and Shreyas Iyer was given a chance at 5. Now the question is since the start of WC'19 till this phase, where were the likes of Suryakumar, Samson, Mayank etc?

 

Iyer and Pant got their chances in 2019 right after WC when there was a no.4 spot which was vacant and a no.5 spot also which finally MSD vacated. So, these two were given decent run to merit their place while the likes of Sanju or Surya or Kishan didn't had the same luxury cum 2020-21.

 

The reason I am mentioning is because a first come first serve process is always an advantage to a batsman. Others who come afterwards get lesser chances unless you completely own the show and overshadow everyone like Suryakumar did in T20s.

I believe Iyer had 2 decent VijaY Hazare series 2018 and 2019.  Yashasvi jaiswal was the one who had breakthrough VH in 2019

Okay so I see Iyer and Surya as two standouts there. 

 

I remember the hype behind Sanju was a lot since his early days in IPL and even in U-19(2014) too. He is same batch as Shreyas Iyer but still with the kind of ability he was spoken of, it is surprising that he never got enough chances in T20s between 2016-2020.

 

Look at the lineup we had in T20s during this period - Dhawan, Rahane (T20 WC'16), Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Dhoni, Jadeja)..these were the names in that team apart from Rohit and Kohli.

IYer did well in Ranji as well with high strike rate.  Sanju made a double century against Goa. IN the match against Mumbai he made only 15. Jaiswal plundered 132 runs. Sanju was never consistent.

Look at Jaiswal In 12 first class games already 7 centuries. averaging 78. List A averaging 53 in 32 matches

Pant was exceeding expectations at intl level by big margin through his performances in tests.

Moreover his returns in odis are good since 2019 ~42 avg, 110 s/r. Should be our no. 5 once fit. 

Samson in all his international chances never exceeded expectations.

in that WC, my fav was sarfaraz. regularly came in middle order and played gritty (but not pretty) knocks at good SR

Sarfaraz was also in 2016 tournament too alongside Pant and Kishan.

needs to play both more List A as well as "A" tours. he has gotten more FC/Ind A experience in 4-day format.
