It does. Ponting as a player in ODIs was much better and much more accomplished than Rohit ever was in ODIs.

There is something called eye test. If you think Ponting is better , I don't have anything to say. IMO he is nowhere near Rohit. There is a reason why Ponting never had better ratings than Rohit.

Rankings cannot be used across era. Hashim Amla has better peak ranking than both Rohit and Punter, does that make him better?

 

Rohit is best among current lot as he meets the current requirements. However I don't see him doing well in 90s with Wasim,Murali etc bowling on balanced surfaces.

 

Where Rohit is better is having an extra gear and batting/hitting for longer periods. Ponting was better technically which is reflected in their Test credentials too.

In ODIs, it is close but Rohit's inability to win the 50-over World Cup goes against him. He was superb in two of them and had Kohli, Bumrah and Shami on his side but yet couldn't win the World Cup.

 

Ponting managed to win three World Cups. He was the best batsman of his team from his generation. Rohit isn't the best batter from his team of this generation.

No match defining in those knockouts. Gave great starts but doesnt trump the ton Ponting made to bury us. Still remember the feeling

Tbh, Gilchrist really set the stage upfront and we as a side were no match to Australians of 2003.

 

Now, the question here is in 2023 World Cup, were Australians as a side together any match to us? We had two of the greatest ODI batters and probably the best ODI bowler from the two sides too. Yet we produced an off day on the biggest occasion ever.

Gilchrist gave a start like we had in 2023 finals but his and Hayden's wicket gave us some hope.Ponting really took it away from there.

They can be used across ,Amla did not perform in ICC events but he was very good in other games. Only ICC events cannot dictate player's caliber.

He was for a period where he was churning 100s for fun.He failed in ICC tournaments.

 

During that time he was dominant in test cricket too. 311 in Lords test happened during that time Didn't he score 250 plus and 4 straight test hundreds against India.

 

Amla had a great test career too, how he went from quota pick to SA's best number 3 batsman in tests is remarkable.

Yes that makes him an ODI great which is beyond doubt. But here I am talking about comparison with another great

 

Its tiny margin either way but I consider whether players can adjust in other era. I see Ponting dominating in current era much more than Rohit doing it in 90s and early 2000s.
