Jay Shah stays silent on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's absence from New Zealand T20Is as BCCI release gives no information

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on late Friday night revealed the squad for the impending white-ball series against New Zealand and for the first two Test matches against Australia. The selectors picked a 16-member squad for both the series against New Zealand where India will play three ODIs and as many T20Is. Among the notable absentees were KL Rahul, from both the squads and Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the T20Is. BCCI release explained the reason behind Rahul not being picked, but revealed on information on why Kohli and Rohit were missing out.

"KL Rahul & Axar Patel were unavailable for the New Zealand Home series due to family commitments," read the BCCI statement that was released on Friday. It also mentioned the reason behind all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's absence from the two Tests against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series. "Jadeja’s inclusion in the squad is subject to fitness," it added.

However, there were no mention of Kohli and Rohit, who are both presently part of the ODI series against Sri Lanka. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has also remained tightlipped on their absence.

 

Interesting, why Jay Shah himself will be silent on this. He could say, they were dropped or rested or did not want to be selected. He wants them to announce their T20I retirements perhaps. Giving them a chance to do it respectfully given their contributions to Indian cricket and stature among Indian Cricket fans.

I don't think BCCI should be forcing retirements. It should be upto the players. They should simply stop picking them.

Usually what they do is they have a chat with them. That is what they did with Sachin towards the end. But he pre-emptively told he was calling it quits. This is applicable for star players atleast. They don't unceremoniously drop them even though there is nothing wrong with that. This is T20 format. It shouldn't be hard for them to let go of it.

They will keep these guys for "just in case scenarios".  Dhoni even at his peak was not a useful T20 player. Not that hard to keep him away. But Kohli has a major reputation. Probably best T20 batsman ever. So they will wait and see how youngsters take up the challenge. If youngsters don't grab their chances they won't hestitate to go back to him. Kohli that is. Rohit is more or less done.
