Cricket in Olympics 2028 & its impact on the Cricketing World

Recommended Posts

How big will this be an invent in terms of its impact on Cricket. Will winning an Olympic 'Gold' take over the ODI World Cup as one of the pioneer awards on a Global Stage?

Cricket in Common Wealth games had been a success and Steve Waugh had said that winning a Common Wealth medal had been one of the highlights of his career.

How do you think this will unfold in future?

None whatsover- lets face it, this sport is not attractive enough for the Americans and Chinese to do well therefore it will never be popular.

You never know china might just take things seriously and start playing the sport since its in Olympics now. And Cricket is also slowly but steadily setting its footing in America. T20 WC in USA might help the sport become popular.

If few more larger economies like China, America, come into Cricket, it might change the complexion of the sport in the future.

No. Cause cricket is essentially a crap sport.

We love it cause we are Indians and we grew up with it. Also we are good it and not good in other sports (changing in the last 10-20 years though).

It is a turn-based sport which isn't as fast paced or watchable as simultaneous sports.

Also it is extremely conditions/toss/luck dependent which is not there in other sports.

All other countries have heaps of better sports entrenched in them.

Only south asian countries which lack these other sports are picking it up - Afghanistan, Nepal the new entrants.

they dont take 'team' sports seriously- no wonder they are rubbish in Football compared to Japan and S Korea. They put their mind to individual sports and team events liek Badminton/TT etc- If China isnt taking cricket seriously this means that they see cricket as a random sport added to the lineup but a gold in it doesnt mean much in the bigger picture as 75% of the world knos about cricket neither follows it

really?

How many ICC tournaments in the last 10 years?

last 10 years is not a metric.

we have the 2nd most number of icc trophies and best W/L ratio in last 10 years.

England, Brazil, Spain, Italy etc have not won any World Cups in last 10 years. Nettherlands, Belgium, other European countries have never won it. Doesn't mean they are not good at it.

Copa America/Euro are basically Asia Cup level (which we have won I think 3-4 in the last 10 years).

ICC has practically given up on China read somewhere this.

America has surely been the prime target now.  Desis are in plenty there.  So game could have some base to begin with.

Many Indo- Pak discarded players have incentive to move there as well..

China might push towards football rather than spending resources on a sport like Cricket.

Cricket is no longer a white sport. It is a very desi sport centered in South Asia, mainly in India.

Even Australia, NZ, England teams will become more desi (they already are to an extent) simply because:

1. The white populations in these countries are decreasing and most of them don't have any interest in cricket and are more interested in football, AFL, rugby

2. The desi population in these countries are increasing and the younger generations relatively have more interest in cricket compared to their white peers partly because their immigrant community members follow the sport and also partly because they have some positive representation there. The prime sports have almost zero desi representation.

I think Cricket is in decent shape in Eng & Aus being prime Anglo Saxon countries Cricket with sporting culture & even reputed clubs operating...  Kiwis will import migrating white Saffers like they are doing & Indian settlers.

SA will suffer due to the politics & uncertain future of whites in the country.

In America desis will carry it.  Maybe in Holland too.

Rest are not worth mentioning.

Cricket will exist always in Eng, Aus and NZ but will become more desi simply because of population numbers.

Aus white population is around 80% and decreasing. NZ around 70% and decreasing. Indian + Chinese are rising.

By 2060-ish I expect the Aus, NZ and Eng teams to have 4-5 desis in the playing XI (currently it's 1-2).

SA cricket can become a black sport (that's what the govt is trying).

Canada and USA with desi populations can become cricket hubs to an extent but issue is the whites there unlike SENA have never been interested in cricket and the infrastructure doesn't even exist. In SENA desis will inherit the white built infrastructure. In Canada-USA they will have to build it themselves.

which I don't understand. Baseball is the biggest borefest I have had to sit through....

But one thing is for sure, if one day day it becomes popular the US team will be among the top teams.

Unfortunately, this sport will never catch on in the western world. Never.

35-45 teams play in World cups ( which there is only one every 4 years) and most of those teams are in the Top 50 of the world rankings- in a sport that only 3/4 teams are competitive if we still cant win any cups then yes we arent good at it.

baseball still has turns and is not so luck/condition dependent.

any sport becomes popular, first world countries will rule.

I know there's disappointment after the WC final but cricket is something India is actually good at.

I'd say right now it is

1. Javelin

2. Cricket

3. Hockey - Badminton - Wrestling - Boxing

in terms of where India stands
