There were several guys who scored much more than him. Rohit and Badrinath were the chart toppers. Same with Ashwin who had one good season in first class. I think it is the potential. Heck every single Australian podcasters were talking about Sai as a potential test match material. Many players since Tendulkar era were picked for potential. Yes, kohli averaged 50+ in domestic. He scored runs against touring australian team too.

He made test debut very late in 2011 that too when SRT didn't play that series. His odi debut was 2-3 years early. In fact, Rohit would have made test debut before Kohli against SA in 2010 if not for the injury just before the game while playing football. This delayed Rohit's test debut.

Point is he was not purely picked based on first class stats. That has been the case for many years. Even Ashwin apart from one half decent season didn't achieve a whole lot to be playing Tests. Indian selection is not always based purely on first class stats. Jaiswal had to do well in IPL to break into Indian test side. He was some sort of a legend an year before he was picked for Tests.

Clearly this is IPL lobby and captain promoting their own players based on IPL performance Sarfaraz should have been in the squad In place of Sudarshan. Sai should have been in A team. Inspite of hundred against NZ ,Sarfaraz was never played in Australia. Paddikal,Jurel batted ahead of him and then he was dropped.

The team management should decide where Rahul will play, will he play as opener or middle order batsman. Ideally he should play as opener. The team management should back Siraj and Prasidh fo form a three pronged pace attack to support Bumrah. Prasidh should be persisted and should not be dropped after 1 or 2 games. Allrounders Shardul or Reddy should be assessed for long terms. If Reddy is not fit and is not able to bowl some overs he should not be considered. Karun Nair should get all this 5 tests to perform and he should not be dropped after 1 or 2 tests. Rahul should play as opener for the full test series. Eashwaran doesn't look like he can open in England conditions. Karun at no 4 should be backed.
vvvslaxman Posted June 7, 2025 Posted June 7, 2025 Kela starting with century is not a good sign. He always does this. Starts well then tapers off. His best series was way back in 2017 where he made 393 runs in 4 tests at an average of 65. THta's it. After that he never had a big series after that. No 400 series. bouncers and tweaker 2

He also got preference for being u19 wc winning captain. He tick all the boxes. Good first class performances. Did well in u19 wc with bat and as captain. He was immediately ear marked as a future. That is where Unmukt Chand missed the bus. He too did well in u19 as captain and batsman but then failed to replicate that in first class cricket. tweaker 1
jusarrived Posted June 7, 2025 Posted June 7, 2025 We are getting exposed badly this series, expect a few sub 100 ao with this lineup.

Lone Wolf Posted June 7, 2025 Posted June 7, 2025 (edited) Bharat Arun also wants Kuldeep in XI. I fully agree. Go with lone specialist spinner rather than relying on Fraudeja who will be thrashed mercilessly by Bazballers with his darts. Drop Fraudeja play NKR rather. Lone spinner in Kuldeep. If India wants to have any shot at winning this thing both Kuldeep and Bumrah are your Trump cards. Only guys that these BazBallers fear. Edited June 7, 2025 by Lone Wolf express bowling 1

Who do you think can be the fourth pacer ? Also are you sure that 4th pacer will produce better output than Shardul, cos I really don’t see any quality bowler apart from the three. Why do you want to compromise batting depth for not much significant bowing upgrade.

The 4th bowler doesn't have to be a pacer if a quality wicket taking option is not available. I would go with Kuldeep as the option that is likely to pose the highest threat to the English players who struggle against spin. Re : batting depth, obsessing about this and packing the batting lineup while compromising on bowling cutting edge has hurt rather than helped India especially overseas.

Selecting bowlers for their batting is a big part of the problems India have had. The wickets are not going to be "flat". In June especially at Headingley, there will be plenty for proper bowlers even spinners. Trundlers will of course get smashed. England have a strong batting lineup and a dart throwing Jadeja is going to be a lot less threatening than a skilled wrist spinner. Edited June 7, 2025 by lemsip

Lol afaik Warne and even recently Yasir Shah has helped winning tests in England. Kuldeep 1.0 has a 5fer in Sydney where we haven't won in like 40 years. Jadeja is not going to scare any English batter. Remember Kuldeep and Jaiswal won us the test series against England at home. His 5fer on a flat Day 1 track in Dharamsala scarred English batters. They can't pick him. Frankly our pace bowling stocks barring Bumrah are unreliable. And KD has highest ceiling among the bowling group after Bumrah. Makes sense to play him. I Fully trust Bharat Arun when it comes to tactics in bowling department. Edited June 7, 2025 by Lone Wolf lemsip 1

Indian cricket falls too easily into muddled thinking without clear role clarity. So we select bowlers for their batting rather than cutting edge, define the keeper mainly as a pure batter and bat him way too high and choose captains for their instagram following and PR rather than proven leadership qualities.
