Yes and that's unfortunate that the world as a whole and we due to our colonial past accepted it...however learning English does provide professional advantages...learning Hindi offers none. And allowing Hindi to reign supreme in states where it's foreign would herald the death of regional vernaculars at the hand of Hindi. It's unfortunate that in some elite or wannabe elite section of Indian society taking in English is regarded as a sign of progress and speaking in mother tongue or vernaculars is looked down upon... Well to each their own but allowing another majority language to become numero uno is death knell of each states culture and uniqueness...I want to enjoy the food culture festivals religious deities languages of each state and each religion...not make India a unitary language and religion ..

Over the years i have slowly realized that one needs to keep their mother tongue above every language. I unfortunately cant speak mine fluently and have realized its going to be dead in 20years. That said we as a nation need to reach a point where we stop hating/mocking other languages. That for me would be a great start.

Exactly and the regional languages are key to safeguarding our culture and uniqueness and avoid being a monolithic society..each state has its strengths and weaknesses and that diversity is what makes India unique. We need to avoid becoming the Hindu Paksitan...where language imposition resulted in the country getting divided ...India is even more complex and any attempt to impose a alien language will be rejected...the risk is not imposition as they will be comically laughed at..the risk is soft power of Bollywood etc which makes Hindi seem more sexy and accessible ala English and American soft power....so what all the states should do is only have English and their mother tongue as road signs and teach those languages....Hindi can be a bucket all option for third language if someone is curious. If the exit polls hold true, mamata might lose because of lack of jobs corruption and development. Hopefully BJP focuses on that and they will be welcomed in bengal. But the moment they try to spread violence and poison in society or try to impose Hindi in bengal...they will be booted out worse than left front.

Is that the right barometer that is needed to measure ? No form of government is perfect. Everything has its own weaknesses.

Coalition based democracy while inherently seeming to be self defeating has more checks and balances. A Modi cannot go and start a war like the *up that Trump has done with Iran without the support of his coalition partners.

I still haven't voted for him despite recognising the good things he's done for my area. But the problem I take is when someone says that we compare ourselves to middle East governments to look better. We really shouldn't. We look better considering the state of the "torchbearer" of democracy across the world right now.

All the more case to have a revised delimitation law to incentivise the regions in India which have performed rather than having to expend more money on these.
