There is room for improvement in ODIs but it's alright. It's not like he will be playing 2027 WC. His batting in t20 not a issue not a captain material

His stats and performances back that up. Selectors need to differentiate across formats, which they've struggled with. Young Kela was a good batter
tapandrun Posted June 16 Posted June 16 (edited) KL had everything to be Ind great, after sachin-dravid era him and rohit were 2 naturally good batters who had a completely game out-of the-box. He had game vs pace and spin and he was good vs bounce and played in the top order. Someone with this ability at-least ends up being Ind great and with such bcci backing he could have been similar status to kolhi/rohit. He was suited for all 3 frmts for the time. Do not think any 1 till may be jiswal comes close to be that good just on potential. Edited June 16 by tapandrun

He could never play the innings like the one Tilak played in Asia Cup final or like he played in recent WT20 against Eng. Tilak is mentally tougher and can be relied on to win matches. Not Kela. It's just that Tilak is not a ODI player and should be selected only in T20s. express bowling 1

He has consistently proved he is too slow for this format as he has no real in between tempo. They not selected him also made him captain. Choosing wrong captain has a much much wider impact than choosing wrong player. One can live with choosing TIlak as ODI batsman. But he is tactically not sound to be a captain. Padikkal has been hard done by the selectors. Padikkal averages 81 in List A from 47 matches with around 15 100s! Tilak in similar no. of matches averages 40 and at a lower SR. Selectors are pushing Tilak in ODIs based on his T20 performances when it's clear Padikkal is a much better ODI batter than Tilak. tapandrun and express bowling 2

That’s why Rutu wasn’t in the squad to begin with as he is already on the fringes of the main team and is “developed” (as can be seen by his performance as well). tapandrun 1

Yeah and we all know whom we would back in a high-pressure match. DK nearly lost us the 2022 WT20 match against Pak (the Kohli special) where he couldn't even score 2 off 2 against part-timer Nawaz and was idiotically stumped! Thanks to Ashwin we won that match else mental midget DK had lost us the match which was won.

Tilak has bullied some poor teams. His record is so so against decent teams. HE doesn't have the tempo. Dare i say Sarfraz has a much better tempo in List A.

Padikkal deserves to be in the squad based on his performances. Nowhere you will see a player averaging 40 trumps a player averaging 80 in the same no. of matches. Padikkal has not been picked for ODIs coz he's a poorer T20 batter. Let that sink in. Same with Sarfaraz in Tests where likes of Sai and Jurel have been preferred over him due to T20/IPL performances. tapandrun 1

Even Tripathi didnt do much wrong in t20is but dropped after few games. Sundar is playing all the formats Ultimate_Game 1
tapandrun Posted June 16 Posted June 16 (edited) Tikal does not have game where he can play with high tempo with minimal risk be it t20s or Odis. He is good when he just need to hit or he has a good start otherwise he just gets gets stuck. Inability to score when he is not trying to hit will cause him issue when opp. teams start using this against him. Most Ind players are losing that kind of game where they can hit 4s playing ball along the ground , push ball into the gaps for 4s or 2s. This was the same issue great t20 wi players faced they were best when they were hitting but building partnership and hitting 4s through gaps was not that easy Thats why pure t20 players are not suited for Odis as there is nothing like v.good 40s. Top scored as opener, that is an underrated series win (in terms of difficulty, much better than 2009 win in NZ), our last in Eng. Also 2005 Eden vs Pak. Real pity how his career turned out in the end.

vvvslaxman Posted June 16 Posted June 16 It is fine and dandy to talk about fielidng 3 teams at the same time. But that is a useless talk if you don't get the structure right. That is where Indian selectors did a major eff up job in this A tour.
