Dhoni is a poor test match player!

Recommended Posts

for once I agree with you. Whenever I questioned Dhoni's abilities I was labelled a fanatic who worshiped Goddy and was jealous of Dhoni's success etc etc...........but now people are realizing that Dhoni's technique is not good enough for Tests.

Bhai understand the difference between Sachin and Dhoni. Dhoni is not a specialist batsman and never was. He made his place because of his batting in ODIs and his test performances were always decent to average and not extraordinary. He is not a top order batsman and will never be. Even in England' date=' he had scored 2-3 aggressive 50s at 7. If our top 6 do not do much, you cannot blame lower order. It is the job of top 6 to score runs for the team. Dhoni is there as WK/batsman and as a WK/batsman his record is fine. Problem is over expectations that people have from Dhoni in test cricket.[/quote'] Adding this conversation, RKT makes a fair point that he is not a specialist batsman and people maybe over expect from him. But don't we as fans, reserve the right to expect our national captain to play consistently and win us test matches atleast sometime? Like seriously, sometime, outside India? He's not done that and his frustrating 30s are outscored by Ashwin, Bhajji and the likes. We expect better from our skipper.

So Bhajji scored more than him in England and South Africa last 2 major overseas tours? Ashwin is that good with the bat because he used to be an opener in his Tamilnadu U19 days before turning to off spin that is why he is groomed as a batsman with traditional technique.

I think its more to do with the fact that we had been struggling to find a good wicket keeper/batsman for many years and then Dhoni burst onto the International scene and did extremely well (with the bat) in ODIs so people expected him to succeed in the same way in Tests but he never had the technique for Tests. Now that India has started to lose a few series' under him, people have suddenly started to realize that Dhoni is not that good a player for Test cricket and are therefore questioning him.

Dhoni is good for hitting some runs when top/middle order has laid a platform. Just don't expect rescue jobs from him that he does so frequently in ODIs.

Dhoni may not be winning games or scoring runs, but he's winning the awards. http://cricketnext.in.com/news/dhoni-chosen-for-aips-fair-play-award/62752-13.html Posted on Jan 02, 2012 at 02:46pm IST Dhoni chosen for AIPS Fair Play award New Delhi: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the first cricketer in the world to be chosen for the AIPS Fair Play 2011 award for his exemplary action in recalling Ian Bell, who was declared out by the umpire during the Test series in England. Dhoni was officially informed about his selection by Roslyn Morris, Secretary General of the All Internationale De La Press Sportive or International Sports Press Association, (AIPS) on Sunday in Sydney. Talking to PTI from Australia, Morris said, "Since Dhoni will not be able to attend the award ceremony on January 13 during the AIPS Congress in Innsbruck, Austria, he was presented with a commemorative plaque at the Sheraton Hotel in Sydney yesterday." AIPS President Gianni Merlo will present Dhoni a trophy during the inauguration of the 2012 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on April 4. "Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world behind football. I value and appreciate cricket's role in the sub-continent and throughout the Commonwealth and hope that the fact we have given a fair play award to a cricketer will encourage the younger generations to pursue the sport honestly and reject corruption and deceit," Merlo said. Dhoni's act of fair play occurred during last summer's series in England when he recalled Bell following a contentious run out decision. On what was the last ball before tea on the third day, Bell hit the ball towards the boundary. He mistakenly thought it had gone for a boundary, left his position and walked off the field assuming the session was over and the ball dead. The ball had not reached the boundary and still in play, was returned to the pitch where Dhoni whipped off the bails with Bell out of his crease. Bell was correctly given run out by the umpire, according to the laws of cricket. But later Dhoni withdrew the appeal and allowed Bell to continue batting. "We knew that according to the laws of cricket he was out but we asked ourselves if this was the way we wanted to get a batsman out and if it was in the spirit of the game. The answer came back as 'no'. We agreed that we were not happy about it and would not feel comfortable at the end of the day back in our hotel rooms," Dhoni said. Dhoni added that a similar thing had happened in the West Indies when Indian run machine VVS Laxman was stumped when the keeper took the bails off in the third Test at Dominica. "It was not quite right," Dhoni said. The 30-year-old Dhoni has been the recipient of many awards including ICC ODI Player of the year in 2008 and 2009.

I have to agree Dhoni is a shocking captain, he basically handed the game to Australia in both innings, the Aussies have always been very good at going for the kill as soon as you give them the chance and Dhoni split blood in the water for the Aussies and the Aussies never looked back after that.

New gen of players in. They all should be given a bit of time to show if can hack it overseas, too small sample size to assess them. In the case of dhoni do we need more evidence? They guy has massive sample size for us to look at for a number of years to see if can do it overseas. The fact is he cant and is poor player overseas. We need to pick players who can deliver home and away. This guy cant! ITS PROVEN! A mess again today and out cheaply. Surely there must be a keeper who will score more runs then dhoni overseas

That was before he toured abroad and stood half way to Timbucktoo while keeping to 125-135 kmph bowlers, letting catches fall short of the slip cordon and watching balls fly by between him and first slip. But yeah, Karthik and Parthiv are still worse than him.

Batting average of close to 40 for a player who always batted at no. 7, I don't think he sucks as a batsman. He is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. We can have as many wicket keepers as we want, it won't be easy to be better than Dhoni. Not many players or wicket keeper average 35+ batting at no. 7, and he averages 40.

Getting your facts wrong as usual? MSD had a very solid batting career (including overseas matches) in the 4-5 years of his international stint. He had several match turning batting efforts in that time-frame (Faislabad 2006, Lords 2007, Perth 2008 etc.) It is only in the last 3-4 years that have seen an alarming degradation of his batting skill, abroad.

^ You don't need a number 7 to average that high when playing at home where the top order and tail also raise their game. It's in away conditions that runs are needed more from the number 7 and there the difference between Dhoni and someone like Saha is marginal. Saha will also give you a much better wicket keeper, strengthening your slip cordon.
