VVS Laxman will join English county Nottinghamshire next month as a replacement for Adam Voges of Australia. More... Laxman to join Nottinghamshire July 08, 2008 21:18 IST VVS Laxman will join English county Nottinghamshire next month as a replacement for Adam Voges of Australia. Laxman, who had a brief stint with Lancashire last season, will make his Nottinghamshire debut against Sussex at Hove on August 27. "I've heard lots of great things about Nottinghamshire and I'm really looking forward to playing there at the end of the season," said Laxman, who was named in the Indian Test squad for the Sri Lanka [images] tour starting July 23, even though his ODI career seems all but over. "Hopefully it will be a successful time for the Club and I can make a positive impact. I've played at Trent Bridge a few times and want to score a lot of runs for the team," the wristy Hyderabadi said. Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket, said Laxman's arrival would boost the side. "Laxman is a world class player and he doesn't play one day cricket for India so he can commit to us at a time when a lot of players will be involved in international tournaments," he said. "He is an accomplished international batsman with excellent footwork and he reads spin very well. He is a big name and we're pleased that he has agreed to join us," Newell added.

no harm in laxman aiming for a odi spot. he will be only 36 during 2011 wc. but the big question will be - who will he replace in the odi squad???????
Even successful ODI players like Sourav and Rahul are finding it difficult to get a place in the team...so forget abt VVS...he played his last ODI long back!

as of now the only available spot in odis is that of rohit sharma, but that will be taken up by shikhar dhawan soon once the selectors remove their mumbai-biasness. it will be extremely tough for laxman, dravid & ganguly to make odi comebacks unless any of them have a smashing limited-overs season

thats being a true optimist Amits, if he was dropped in 06 itself after only having one chance to get into one day scheme of things why in the world would selectors give him a shot? Would love to see him play more ODIs but the harsh reality is that even Ganguly who was in a pretty good form was dropped. Hope VVS does well, and i wouldnt mind seeing him in light blue.

More... BCCI v ICL BCCI bars its players from counties with ICL players Cricinfo staff July 17, 2008 317607.jpgPiyush Chawla has been denied permission to sign up for Hampshire © Cricinfo Ltd The BCCI has cranked up the pressure on English counties who have employed players linked with the unauthorized Indian Cricket League (ICL) by "advising" its own players to not sign up with such teams. Niranjan Shah, BCCI secretary, told Cricinfo that its contracted players such as VVS Laxman, Piyush Chawla and Ajit Agarkar, who have signed or are in the process of signing with English counties this season, are being "advised" to pull out. "We have advised our players not to play in the English counties where there are ICL players because we don't want our players playing with teams that have other players playing in unauthorised tournaments," Shah said. Shah, however, clarified that "non-ICL" players from these county teams will be allowed to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) - Hampshire's Dimitri Mascarenhas had played for Rajasthan Royals in the tournament's first season. Chawla was expected to sign up for Hampshire, Laxman was set to join Nottinghamshire in August, and Agarkar was reported to be in talks with Worcestershire. The BCCI first granted permission to Chawla to join Hampshire and then decided against it, as first reported in cricketnirvana.com. The ECB has allowed around 25 cricketers associated with ICL to represent 15 of its 18 counties after it faced legal action from the unauthorized league, which was backed by the country's strong trade laws that protects the rights of individuals. Only Middlesex, Somerset and Essex have teams without any ICL players.

Absolute ****' date=' the BCCI's policy is now affecting non ICL Indian players from improving. This is when it becomes an obsession with crushing the ICL - it is absolute madness to defy your own players' employment interests with ICL players.[/quote'] Exactly. Nevermind that our two most successful/consistent Test Bowlers in Rp Swing and Zaheer Khan owe part of their renaissance due to highly informative and successful stints in English County Cricket. Ban access to the MRF, now a lot of English County Cricket, pretty soon our team support structure will match that of Pakistan where help for bowlers is available via a nandrelone injection and a couple of tokes of the magic weed. Burn in hell BCCI!

Cutting ties with MRF was understandable, but the BCCI must realise that this move will get them nowhere into pressuring England to cut ties with the ICL. County Cricket is an amazing resource for budding overseas cricketers and the BCCI need to utilise it, lest they trust themselves to build up Indian domestic cricket into a similar resource with the money from the IPL - something which I sincerely doubt.
