My apartment is in ruins! my roof has collapsed, and the insulation has destroyed the furniture and the carpet (though now i can finally get those stone flooring); and my other home is just as proper fracked! the perimeter fencing has collapsed and the pakistani neighbor is hassling over the repairs (that ***** does not have insurance but he wont admit it), the roof shingles are all over the streets and our lawn, and the pool's sightings are ripped to shreds... one of the windows broke and both the mandir and office room's carpet is soaked wet... mildew has already set in and it seems neither residences are fit for living. frack you Eisenhower!!! (five bucks if you get that) still no electricty

Or when you left. Well you get the idea :D Btw, re: Eisenhoer; so were you referring to how he didnt allocate enough funds for hurricane control and how he labeled it as“the local nature” of hurricane effects. Comeon, gimme 2.5 dollars for that :tounge_smile:

(Eisenhower's nick name was IKE.. or was it the middle name?)

Well as would have been evident, my experience with the storm has been quite harrowing, though it cannot even compare to the disaster that has been wrecked upon the poor inhabitants of the caribbean islands. nonetheless, the response of the FEMA and the Harris County Police has been outstanding. Same goes for the good people at Center Point Energy who had numerous employees working 36 hour shifts to restore electricity to the city. Our university has suffered quite a bit of damage however, the damage is localized and thus normal service has resumed. FEMA has setup several Points of Distribution or PODs around the city and metro area where MRE(s), Ice and water are being distributed. There is one at my university, and shall be there till 6pm tomorrow. If you are in the Houston area and require assistance, please come to the Robertson Stadium at Scott and Holman and the Police stationed there will provide you directions. Heck, you might even see me there jumping about like a over caffeinated jerk (speaking of which, lookout for my little chat with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Dynamo player Bobby Boswell on NBC nightly news; the congresswoman and the Houston Dynamo players were there volunteering with about 200 other UH students). The storm has taught be one significant lesson: buy insurance. while my aunt's place where i weathered the storm is insured, my apartment is not and am relying on our management company and a FEMA bailout for relevant repairs. (for once i wish ICF $ was real money) There are quite a few pieces that are still left to pick up, but Houston is resilient city and hopefully things will be back to normal by the end of the next week. On a personal note, i lost a person friend, mentor and beloved professor to the storm: Dr. Michael Friedberg who taught me all the algebra i know. He will be dearly missed!

RIP. if you are renting, get insurance for your personal possessions, and of course, health and life insurance. for all other damages, the owner of the property is responsible for repairs. moreover, any damage to the property, and your personal possessions not committed by an accident, or an act of nature, but due to improper construction etc etc are the responsibility of the person you rent from.

How expensive is Renter's insurance for you guys? It would vary of course based on the amount of coverage etc but broadly speaking. My renter's insurance is about 20$ a month, and I get it from my car renter agency so I get a better deal there than had I gone for a new agency. However this doesnt include flood rent coverage, probably something you folks would like to have.
veer Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 this is the 8th day.. and we are still without power.. but am not complaining as the employee's of energy provider working 16 hrs a day... and thank god we never lost water supply.. its quiet an experience.. long lines at gas stations.. (some waited for 4 hours and still didnt get anything) traffic signals not working.. trees on roads.. and on houses giant advertising boards down on highways neighbors with generators helping neighbors without power dark nights.. never experienced this in India ... but amazing... a week ago I decided to shave only after we get power.. but after 8 days.. its very itchy..

Ram Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 This is what I just LOVE about America and in general, the West..... The value they place on human life and property is simply outstanding... When these storms and other natural calamities strike, there's a genuine feeling of urgency in the govt agencies to do something and prevent inconveniences to the people. Its not just during during natural disasters, it reflects in aspects of their life. If there's one thing I will miss about America, if and when I go back home, its this sense of collective responsibility of people's lives and property in the govt. Btw, good to know you guys are safe and sound. Just weather out the storm a bit longer and everything should be back to normal, hopefully.
