DomainK Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 The Maharashtra government is all set to change the legal definition of wife. Now a live in girl friend will be considered a wife. That effectively makes a live-in equal to a marriage(for the woman). I find this ridiculous beyond imagination. Live in happens where a couple does not want to get married. How can you forcibly make them husband and wife? So it becomes a marriage where a divorce is not needed to break out. Rural women do not get into live in relationships much. Its the educated and modern that do. They enter into a live-in fully understanding the implications. Law does not have to give them the rights of a wife because that's exactly what they do not want to be. The women can leave the relationship anytime when they feel uncomfortable...that's the genius of the understanding. Implications can be dangerous and funny. - Women will now be free to walk in and out of relationships with law in a leash like a dog that they can shoo on the bfs if he dare not obey them. They can sue the bf as a wife, make his life hell and walk out of the so called marriage. - The guy in a live-in wont be able to quit the live-in without the girl's consent since she has become his wife. If the guy quits and gets into another live-in or a legitimate marriage, he can be sued for bigamy. - Wont be late before resident domestic helps claim the status of wife because they managed to seduce the master. - Marriage does not remain significant anymore. All one has to do is get into a live in. Hell with marriage. - I know several women who lust after very young rich boys for money. Law is now giving them a means for the crime. All a woman has to do is to find a rich young boy above 18 who lives away from home, get him to move in with her by seducing him and bingo! she becomes rich. And law is the partner in crime. There are immense dangerous implications. Unfortunately the law is being created by people who do not understand the newer generation. They are encouraging something that they should be actually discouraging.

beetle Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 This is the work of the stupid Women rights group.This will make polygamy like situation legal.The man can move in with another woman ,have kids without the fear of polygamy law being enforced. The other woman is happy because she gets all benifits . The poor legal wife and her kids are the only losers. Waisay ,this rule comming(if it becomes law) in a country which is still trying to decriminalise homosexuality is such irony.....

As far as I know, no country considers live-in as the same as marriage. Live-ins are most wide spread in US than anywhere else. Even they dont recognize a live-in as a special status. Its just married or unmarried. Pre-nups??? Yeah, I guess if it does become a law, there will be soon prenups for live-ins.

Then if one stops staying with them, will the relationship automatically expire ? Can one stay with separate partners every day of the month and consider them all their husbands/wives ?

I have seen some very recent episodes of judge judy and she has made it clear again and again that there is no special law for live in couples.
