He is a lawyer and a man who can plan strategy and execute in time of crisis. Mukherjee is politically savvy and can be expected to give nuanced responses to difficult political predicaments. He also has vast experience in government but the problem the Congress party has is that it does not have anyone to replace him in the external affairs ministry. A Congress source said, "We understand that India has the sympathy of the people and governments all over world. Mukherjee can use it to our advantage and also strategise India's option to fight terrorism. But his present role is also equally important. While if Chidambaram become home minister, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [images] can very well manage the finance portfolio."
fineleg Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 At the Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday Sonia Gandhi took the lead in saying that irrespective of the elections there is a feeling that the government and the party must take responsibility. Taking the cue, other senior leaders like Union Ministers P Chidambaram, Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal and H R Bhardwaj attacked Patil, without naming him, saying somebody must be held responsible. The refrain of these leaders at the meeting was that strong action is needed in the wake of the Mumbai terror strikes and accountability has to be ensured at the higher as well as lower levels. Patil then offered to step down, saying he was ready for any decision the CWC took. The home ministry under Patil has been criticized for not having acted upon Intelligence reports about the likelihood of a major terror attack much before the Mumbai siege happened. Patil, who has been in public life for over four decades, was brought into the Manmohan Singh Cabinet as he was considered a complete Gandhi loyalist. Since his appointment, Sonia Gandhi had turned down repeated demands for his ouster from the government. Patil was also one of the Congress' candidates for the post of President last year after the tenure of A P J Abdul Kalam got over. :omg: But, the Left parties, which were supporting the government from outside, had put their foot down.

The Outsider Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Not sure what difference it is going to make. It's a systematic rot across all parties and most politicians. Till people start valuing human life in India nothing is going to change. Forget terrorism, hundreds of people die every year in India in something as banal as railway accidents. Hundreds of thousands are displaced every year without adequate compensation in the name of development schemes. Poor in India are treated and viewed as insects - a few more or a few less is nothing but a minor annoyance. The only thing we can hope for is that the death of high profile people and foreigners in the latest attack will bring about some changes but I am not too sure about that either - how many improvements to the system did we see after the Parliament attack?

cowboysfan Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Govt to set up federal spy agency: PM toi NEW DELHI: In the wake of Mumbai terror attacks, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said the government has decided to set up a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), strengthen air and maritime security and create four NSG hubs in various parts of the country. Sharing the country's "anger and outrage" over the Mumbai attacks, he appealed to parties to rise above political considerations to meet the challenge unitedly. "Terrorists and enemies of our nation must know that their actions unite rather than divide us," he said in his opening remarks at the all party meeting convened by him to discuss the situation arising out of the terror strikes. Describing the attacks as "different" from the previous terror strikes, Singh said "in the face of this national threat and in the aftermath of this national tragedy, all of us from different political parties must rise above narrow political considerations and stand united. "We should work together in the interest of the country at this critical juncture." He said the parties should build a consensus on what needs to be done to strengthen the ability of the system to meet these threats. "The terrorists and enemies of our nation must know that their actions unite rather than divide us," the Prime Minister said at the meeting from which leader of the opposition L K Advani, BJP president Rajnath Singh and Shiv Sena stayed away. He hoped that the political parties would be able to give a collective assurance to the nation that, across the political spectrum, "we stand together at this hour." Maintaining that the government shared the hurt of the people and their sense of anger and outrage, Singh said several measures are already in place to deal with the situation. "But clearly much more needs to be done and we are determined to take all necessary measures to overhaul the system," he said. "We have finalised a set of legal measures based on the recommendations of the Administrative Reforms Commission which includes the setting up of a FIA," Singh said. The Prime Minister said the government would further strengthen maritime and air security for which measures have been initiated. This will involve the Navy, the Coast Guard and the coastal police, as well as the Air Force and the civil aviation ministry. "The anti-terrorist forces of the country will be further strengthened and streamlined. The National Security Guard, which is the principal anti-terrorist force of the country, will be given additional facilities and the size of the force is being augmented," he said. i would give the FIA a massive budget and hope their main aim is infiltrating these groups both in india and pakistan.they should also be allowed to take out suspected militants in pakistan.
