Nowadays every movie has a gay reference. Kamalhasan says 'Gay' in the movie and the whole theatre was making a note of it. Every sitcom has a gay character for the laughs. There are Gay love stories in the mainstream hollywood movies. So, people are generally scared because of the awareness being spread around. People will know that they can 'do', just because they 'can'. Pshyco-analysts say the same to why men/women cheat. It's because they 'can'. In your case, your friend's GF is aware that her BF can, if he wants to. That's where the phobia comes from.
