The Outsider Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Obama is the President of LA? :hmmmm2: Who is the president of LA?:winky: I think it's very difficult to come up with a good assessment without actually having lived in the different places being compared. Visiting for a few days does not always give a good idea and perspective. Personally, I have only lived in the US, Italy, and Germany for a significant amount of time - staying in an apartment, working/studying, commuting, doing grocery etc. and given a choice I would prefer living in Germany over the US/Italy. So this is deviating from the OP which just asks between US/UK/Canada/Australia, but Germany as a place to live in has few parallels. It helped that I was in Munich, which is probably the best place in Germany. Public transportation, civic amenities, health care, and the general feeling of relaxation which really cannot be put into words is better than the US. Of course, US is a huge country and offers far more with regards to travel and things to do at an affordable price, but with regards to day to day life Germany wins out.

NYC is completely cosmopolitan - perhaps the most cosmopolitan place in the world rivaled only by London. Jackson Heights in Queens is completely desi.

Pros; - you will be closer to your family (this might not be a pro, but most Indians usually like their families) - no shortage of cricket - cheaper cost of living (i might be wrong, i haven't been to India in a while) - food (not a pro for me 'cos i think Indian food sucks, but it's a pro for you) Cons; - pollution: air, noise, and all other forms - annoying people who want to know every ****ing detail of your life before you even know them - girls are mostly ugly to average at best with weird bodies that aren't in proportion - salaries which make you wish you could come back to LA - corruption - lack of courtesy (when waiting in lines, opening doors, tone of voice, etc.) - lack of professionalism in people - electricity cuts - water shortages - poor transportation for the most part (although Delhi has improved with the metro) - poverty - cow ****, goat ****, bull ****, dog ****, and human **** on the roads etc. etc. My personal list of cons for India is quite long, but i tried to put down a list of general cons.

NJ has lots of desi population, Houston,TX has tons too, NOrthernVA (DC area) has big desi and middle-east population (lots of rich bastards there), Charlotte,NC has plenty.. NYC is the world city, tons of foreigners, not just desi.

I agree there are ills in India as it is still a developing nation (despite what the elites in India would have you believe with the economic powerhouse meme), but because it is a developing nation, there are loads of opportunities too; not just to make money, but to make a difference in people's lives and in your own country. You're quite patriotic and I'm sure you'll understand the feeling.

I know someone who lives in Canada who feels it is a Top Place to live. In current economic condition, probably Canada is less affected than US, and hence that may be another advantage there. Economy is very important when you consider "good place to live", and for the next some years its gonna be a struggle in US.

They have more to do with the people's attitudes. I have been to places like Vietnam which are also developing but i could never come up with such a long list of cons for them. Their people are genuinely friendly, they have a concept of civic sense (cleanliness), common courtesy, basic amenities of life are still covered (even if the quality of life may not be of a western standard) and their chicks are also far more bang-able than Indian girls. But if you are going back for the sake of reversing the brain drain with the intention of improving the country in a small way, i have a lot of respect for you. That's a damn good reason to move back, probably the only good reason.

There everything from the people manning the Wal-mart counters to your hair-dresser to the manager at the Bank of America is either Indian or Pakistani.. :giggle: I once went to the Swaminarayan temple in Edison.. I swear, I have not seen so many Indians in a temple even in India...

That road is littered with crowded Indian food joints, with Pani puri being sold on the road.. You can even see Paan stains everywhere. :haha:
