The Vicious Yuvi cycle

Recommended Posts

The way he got out today was weird...he seemed to stumble and to fall over himself...very klutzy way to get out. This kind of thing happens when you are in two minds about how to play...again, I would put it down to nerves. And settling those nerves will come with the confidence of a good challenging innings under the belt. I hope he gets it soon.

So you are saying when he does score outside it does not matter.
Where did you get that idea from? But yeah, a 50 odd after the opposition has bowled 250 overs, the match is dead, and everyone and their dogs are just hanging around so that we reach the cut off stage for the match to be called off certainly does not matter.

i will go on record saying that yuvi is not a test class batsman-he simply is not.his position is way too important in the lineup where the batsman has to make sure we dont lose any more wickets and yuvi looks like he will get out from the next ball.he is also holding up the development of a young batsman.he is fantastic t20 and ODI batman but he should not play tests.

And I will go on record and say that he is a test batsman, even though I do feel for the young ones he is keeping out...but retirements will come down the line so they too will get their chance. And if he doesn't perform soon, then he too will be prematurely retired.

What's an unmitigated disaster? What he did in Australia and West Indies.....well he has been there done that as well.
In cricketing batting terms, an unmitigated disaster for me is one when the batsman looks completely out of place, simply cannot put bat to ball and ends up severely shorting the team’s overall chances. (like for eg, Ponting’s 2001 tour to India). None of that has happened to Yuvraj in this tour.

If merely ‘failing in live situations’ is the sole criteria for unmitigated disaster, then most batsman will have unmitigated disaster every third series they play. And the reason why I referred to the 50 in the second innings of the second test was because I wanted highlight how impatient and short-sighted fans have become. Only in the previous series, Yuvi helped us win a test and draw a test. Sure, he has failed in this series so far, but that does not mean we have to have this debate about whether he is good enough to play test cricket all over again.

^I have higher expectations from an Indian number 6 than what he has shown. What a letdown he has been after being given 30 test matches! This is not a NZ or Pakistani batting line up - he has to put up a favorable case with guys like Dravid, Tendulkar, and Laxman who precede him in the line up and Ganguly who he replaced. I am not asking for him to be dropped right away, but really one more series is all he should get and India can afford. If he flops against Sri Lanka it should be curtains for him for any foreseeable future.

do people remember how terrible Ricky Ponting used to look in the first 15-20 balls of his innings? Especially in the 1st half of the career? There is no reason why Yuvi can't be as effective as the dubya-jr, if he puts his head down and applies himself. It is easy to pontificate and write people off. Bottomline is we have a quality player in our team, who has shown that he can deliver under pressure in the limited overs format umpteen number of times. Is he worth the investment of giving him an extra-long run to make the test squad? Inspite of him repeatedly showing some serious technical deficiencies against the moving ball, IMO if you think objectively about it, you'd probably end up saying yes. Especially given that we have a capable batting line-up that can carry the guy for a little while.

so you are your own Devil's advocate?

I disagree Cochise. He has been given a fairly consistent run in the past too, ignoring his performance on test by test basis. But Yuvi failed to blossom even then. It was the same problem then too. He did well in Pak, relatively okay in India and failed completely in WI. Then he failed to play even one good knock in Australia where he was keeping Sehwag away. And now he has failed even in NZ where the bowling is mediocre at best. How many tests do you want him to play continuously? Was this much not enough: I think he was given more than 2-3 tests in a row to seal his place in the team. I'll give you the list: 1. Delhi test in 2005 vs SL 2. Ahmedabad test in 2005 vs SL 3. Lahore test in 2006 vs Pakistan 4. Faisalabad test in 2006 vs Pakistan 5. Karachi test in 2006 vs Pak 6. Mohali test vs in 2006 vs England (He didn't play the 1st test because he wasn't 100%) 7. Bombay test in 2006 vs England 8. Antugua test in 2006 vs WI 9. St Lucia test in 2006 vs WI 10. St Kitts test in 2006 vs WI 11. Jamaica test in 2006 vs WI So it was 11 tests in a row. Some stats savy guys can tell us about the runs scored by Yuvraj and his average during this period too. I watched every test that is listed above and I can say with confidence that Yuvraj failed miserably in these tests. And yes... Even after failing in these tests, he wasn't dropped from the side. He twisted his knee in October during the champions trophy and was ruled out for SA tour. It was this tour when Vengsarkar called back Ganguly and Ganguly repaid his faith in the most specatacular fashion for next 2 yesrs!! So?
Those were 3-4 years ago..don't mean much.

Yuvi has got a hell lot of chances in tests .. its time to move on as he has never been dependable in tests As I said the other day too, there are Ranji players who are quite equipped for tests and should get a break now .. let us keep the test team seperate and develop test specialists too like Dravid, Laxman etc.

So getting out in that fashion to a pace bowling demon like Jesse Ryder is down to nerves?? And what about that 50+ he scored in the last inning?? It was hardly chanceless..was easily the worst batsman out of the top 6 despite the fact that he had the easiest game situation. I'll say again Yuvraj needs to be dropped as soon as the NZ series is over..if not he'll come back to India and he'll feast on these conditions..and with the schedule we have the next we're abroad the selection committee would have changed and everythin would have been completely forgotten. He isn't test class..if his performances against WI,Aus,NZ doesn't convince you, nothing will.Chandan brings up a good point..in that most people here defend him by saying he has never been given a consistent run and list of matches provided by Chandan proves that he had been given a long run before as well and the only reason he was dropped was because of his knee injury. Its time to face the facts for Yuvi supporters..i know he looks elegant with that big backlift of his but sorry his driving technique is no good. And hes 28 already..and has played 25% of his career already..i find it hard to believe that he'll be reversing the trend in future.Might as well give an opportunity to a youngster.
