Modi hints at two IPL tournaments a year

Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has hinted that the Twenty20 tournament could be held twice a year, once in India and a shorter one overseas. "The IPL will be based in India, but the second season (of a year) we are planning gives us the chance to see if a market exists and we are seriously looking at what we can do with it," he told the Daily Telegraph. He said he had been encouraged by the response from fans in South Africa, where the IPL was shifted for the 2009 season due to concerns over security as the competition clashed with general elections in India. "We have turned the challenges and adversities in moving to South Africa into an opportunity," he said. "It is fans who determine if you are successful or not and they have come out in force here. It has shown that the tournament can be in any region, in any country. This opens up many different opportunities for us." The USA, where the ICC has advised cricket officials to install an IPL-style Twenty20 league, is one of the countries Modi considers a potential host. "America throws up challenges but the format we have developed works," he said. "Apart from watching great cricket they have an enjoyable evening out. That will work anywhere. "Before this tournament we did not know if we could do it. But we do know now. We have to satisfy an appetite across the world and build a fan base across the world. " The IPL and the huge money it offers players has had many worrying about the primacy of Test cricket, and West Indies captain Chris Gayle's comments earlier this month that he "wouldn't be so sad" if Tests vanished in favour of Twenty20s had sparked a furore. There have already been several demands for a window in the official calendar to accommodate the IPL, and the rise of Twenty20 is set to continue with the launch of tournaments in England, and another involving players from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. http://content.cricinfo.com/ipl2009/content/story/405679.html

lol, i don't think so. even if people don't get tired for tamasha cricket, they are going to have nightmares with international cricket scheduling. doing it once a year is more than enough :whack: i think a more sensible idea is to have "co-hosts" every year and half of the league matches can be played in another country....at most.

NO ... PLEASE DONT ... There is such thing as too much of a good thing. 2 IPL tournaments a year is one sure fire way to kill off a successful product. People will get sick of it very quickly. If Mr.Modi does this, then it will be a dumb business move I feel.

more 20-20 will be the best thing for true cricket fans who would rather watch the whole game and admire or criticize rather than act as high ground puritan expert commentators after reading cricinfo scores at the end of every day of a test match Lets have 2 IPLs :yay::yay:

2 would be a bit too much. Can't wait for the IPL to come back to India next year. The business end of this IPL has been a bit pheeka.
There will have to be less matches in each IPL if there are two of them DLF maximum and Citi moment of success should never be heard again IMO

A bit two much, may be? If they are thinking to go overseas (amits) once in a way, they could hold a seven match knockout competition between the eight teams, a bit like the FA Cup :icflove:, should still be good to rake in the foreign moolah.

Modi is obssessed with how American sports is conducted. He is trying to turn cricket into one. He doesn't really care about International cricket. So he will stop at nothing to replace international cricket with IPL. Whatever he wants he is able to get his way right now because players don't mind playing IPL as it is the shortest way to make bucks. If his plan goes ahead and happens it will screw the FTP and Dhoni will sit out for a Test series.

Its possible. I think the second one abroad may just have each team playing against the other only once. Since there is going to no home/away concept, one against each team should be enough. That means 28 matches in the league phase, 2 seims and 1 grand finale. 31 matches in all. Can be completed in 15-20 days. I'm sure a 20 day window can be kept open for this. May be at the expense of meaningless ODIs. But dont touch the Test :nono: though

ODI means more commercials because it is longer. So it won't go away all of a sudden. There might some tweaking like 2 innings of 25 overs each. Combination of T20 and ODI.
Thats a really lame logic, does that mean Test Matches are the best format for advertising? Its not about the duration, its about the viewership.
