coffee_rules
I think the domination is probably one of the greatest. But he has not gotten a grand slam unlike Laver. None of them have - Sampras, Bjorg, Lendl. Only Agassi and Federer have won all major titles. If Nadal was to play federer, probably he wouldn't have gotten the french title. pan_walla
Posted on the other thread so might as well post here- Henman on Federer I've said many times that not only is Roger Federer the best player I ever played, he is the best that ever played. I played against him and Sampras but what puts Federer ahead is that his game is complete. Sampras was a phenomenal player and his record speaks for itself but you always felt there were aspects of his game that you could target. Sampras never really returned that well, so as long as you were being disciplined on your serve, you could stay in touch, get to a tie-break and then anything can happen. Against Federer, whether you were serving or returning, you knew you had to work unbelievably hard for every point, every game.

Guest Gunner
the tennis standards have gone down in general. Where are Edwards,Beckers, Agassis, Sampras etc. Federer has no competition except may be Nadal You are completely off the mark. If you look at tennis history, the contest were almost always between a duo, there weren't more than two big competitors at any time during the open Era except between 1972-75. Some notable examples: Ilie Nastase, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall,John Newcombe and Arthur Ashe - early 70s. Borg and McEncroe - 75-80. McEnroe and Jimmy Connors - upto 84. Lendl, Edberg and Becker - upto 90. Sampras and Agassi - 90s Federer and Roddick upto 2003. then Federer and Nadal so far.

Gambit
the tennis standards have gone down in general. Where are Edwards,Beckers, Agassis, Sampras etc. Federer has no competition except may be Nadal Absolutely. I was no fan of Pistol Pete but he had to contend with guys like Agassi, Chang, Becker, Edberg(for a while), Courier(my favourite), Goran, Rafter etc. Nadal > Federer No doubt about it. Federer might have better skills but he mentally disintegrates against the Spanish monster. Federer has one genuine competitor and he just can't handle him. yoda
Nadal > Federer Let's see how many slams Nadal wins over his career. He clearly has the head-to-head advantage.

But, it is possible that Federer makes them look worse than they really are.
Sooda
Sampras had more competition in his day- it wasnt just Agassi. Becker was doing well in slams well into the 90's (96 Aussie open champ for instance) Pat rafter won two USOs, Ivanisevic was always a threat, Courier, Kraijceck and there were the specialist clay courters- Muster, Rios, Brugera etc. Fed for much of his career didnt really face the same level of competition. The guys he beat in GS finals/on his way to finals- Roddick, Gonzalez, Baghdatis, Hewitt, Phillipousis for his first Wimb- who else..? aside from Safin Hewitt and possibly Roddick who are Slam champs themselves; the rest are good but nothing more. Really he has to beat Rafa in a final in a Slam sometime soon.

Sampras had problems with players who can return his booming serves(hence his great rivalry with Agassi, who was one of the best returners ever).Federer imo is a better returner than Agassi and he has the best all-round game .i think i would give Federer the edge everytime in a hypothetical match where the both pete and Fed are playing at their best. Riley's Girl
I'm not really objective when it comes to Federer, so I'll just keep quiet & let his record do the talking... Did I mention the 15 Grand Slams?
99.94
No! Not the best. The best at beating complete chumps maybe. Put him up against anyone of reasonable quality (Murray, Nadal) and he is found out.
Celeste
Frederer needs to beat Nadal in French Open to be considered as greatest.
