After the first match, India was on 128 and SL on 106 or so. Since we lost to a team that was ranked a long way below us, we lost several points. Since we were "expected" to win against them, the final did not bring in too many points.

The points system is complex and it takes many things into account. for example, if Kenya goes on to beat SA, Kenya would gain like 15 points while SA would lose like 10. which also makes sense! If SA beats Kenya, SA would gain like 0.5 points or less while Kenya would lose like 0.2 points or something. same thing happened here. India lost a minnow team thats why we lost 3 points but when you beat SL you dont gain those 3 points back because you are already ahead of SL and expected to win. so basicallly, a team like SA can not climb up the ladder by beating really bad teams compared to beating teams like aus and India. This is fair and makes sense. The bigger team you beat the more points you get and you get less points for beating smaller/minnow teams. you can't win the same points by beating Kenya as to beating Australia...which would be stupid and unfair. playing home or away is not taken into account because as an International team you are supposed to be on top of your game regardless of the venue. Australia remained at number one for a long time because they beat every one away and home all the time. winning the tournament final is also counted as one single ODI game so that winning finals cant put you on the top, you have to be on the top winning every thing that comes your way. :yes: If I am not wrong, the system also takes account of the margin you lose or win by. :yes: I feel that its a smart system and analyzes all the teams in the right manner :two_thumbs_up:

Winning away from home has traditionally been difficult for all teams and a ranking system which does not take into account this very basic facet of cricket is flawed.

well..please try to understand that India is an International team. home and away are different things but common you need to realize that even in India all the tracks are not the same. All the tracks are different and what are the chances that all the players from Indian team has played on all of the Indian tracks? and how many have really played enough games on each track to really understand each and every track as far as the technicality is concerned? as far as I understand this, all the games, regardless of final or not are given the same amount of weight. again, I might be wrong so proper clarification would be awesome. :two_thumbs_up:

Teams get extra points for winning a series/tournament. For example if a team wins 2-1 it will get the 2 points for the win and also some extra for winning the series, but if it's 2-2 they will just get the points for the win. Matches played as part of the bigger tournaments like Champions Trophy and World Cup have more points at stake than say some match being played in a bilateral series.

The margin of victory is irrelevant - same number of points are awarded whether a team wins by 1 run or by 100 runs.
