Sachinism Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 now transfer the money to me:P WINNAR! On topic. I personally don't believe in astrology at all. I know people around me who believe in it. I know this one person who believes in it so strongly that they forget you make your own destiny. Its like if someone told them they would be a millionaire one day, that person would just sit there and wait for it to happen. Its an extreme example, but I feel if you believe in astrology you take away the belief in yourself. An astrologer can say anything, but at the end of the day you'll have to work for that something to happen. You could have set goals for yourself and you could work towards them its the same thing.
Gambit Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Palmistry supposed quite accurate and more of an exact science. There is our family "guruji" who comes up with all kinds of predictions. sometimes very unlikely ones too' date=' I always try to prove him wrong but he always gets them right. Once he predicted I will get a job on may 3rd and I got job confirmation on that very freakin day. I gave up arguing with my mom over it and am just waiting for that "ahaa" moment. Frankly when I am low I ask her what the guruji has to say.:P[/quote'] No offence, but how does this 'family guruji' arrangement come to be? How does a 'guruji' attach himself to a family? Some of my friends also have such a seer that advises them/their antecedents on financial and personal matters.
Brainfade Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I have seen some really crazy people with their astrological obsession...they seem to take it as a word of God. I personally have no belief whatsoever - I think its the most imperfect science going around these days. What are your beliefs and experiences regarding the same ? You're wrong, my friend. Calling it an imperfect science is an insult to science and scientists. Astrology does not come anywhere near being a science. It is a compendium of remote coincidences passing for cause-and-effect. I know everyone has a story like this, but here's a recent one - a friend's pregnant wife went to the doctor - the ultrasound said "girl." She went to her relative's house - this guy is a "well-known" astrologer, who said that there was no way it was a girl - the due date, the stars, the sun, the moon, the planets and pluto - all aligned to say "boy." Guess what - it is a girl. So what does the astrologer say? "Oh she was born 5 days early; given this new birth date, it had to be a girl." Dude ....

My mom's dad was a very dildaar person. Whenever there were any poojas and stuff he used to call only pundits from one particular family and used to reward them after the ceremony and also helped few times financially or otherwise. That old pundit has lot of respect for him and in turn for his family. For outsiders he charges for advices but for us its free of charge. :P

Agree with the bolded part whole heartedly, astrology is not a science, and there is nothing called as an imperfect science, since the world science means ""knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."
Ram Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Going off on a tangent; I think it is a bit inappropriate to term Astrology a ‘science’ and then bash it for exhibiting no characteristics that even remotely resemble modern science as we have come to know it. I am willing to consider the prospect that, many 100s of years ago, there were Sadhus/Ascetics who may have had the ‘ability’ to ‘foretell’ the future, through their spiritual practices. I think it will be bit naïve to dismiss anything that does not conform to modern scientific standards as hogwash or farce. There are many things that happen in this world that no science can offer a reasonable explanation for. My theory is that, this once pure and true practice of astrology got corrupted as it was passed from generation to generation. Increasingly, corrupt people looking solely to gain monetary profit from these practices maligned its name so much that today, most of us tend to believe it does not work at all. In short, the blame for the collective skepticism over these practices must go not just on the practice itself, but to a large extent, to the people who practice it. I am big believer in the theory the human brain is capable of things that would otherwise simply blow our minds away. Predicting the future may just be one those fantastic capabilities.

About the bolded part, slippery slope dude, if you are willing to consider this, why wont you consider other outlandish claims? All you need to consider are the facts befre you, the human mind can be capable of doing superhuman things which we may have not realized yet, that is a fine assumption to make. But jumping from that to giving credence to prophecies or seers is a stretch, because on one hand the human mind is a physical entity, bounded by the physical realm and natural laws, where as predicting future is not a physical entity it is a metaphysical concept. Also, being proud of your culture and past is good, but being objective about it is also very important, and not view the past with rose tinted glasses.

If what you are saying is remotely true, all the known physics is wrong since at the very heart of physics is the element of randomness at the level of quantum mechanics which renders any predictions meaningless. Einstein wanted to believe that "God" doesn't play dice, but it turns out he does. So predicting future will mean predicting correctly how all those dice throws turn out to be. As an aside, the world's best brains coupled with fastest most m^&*#r****ing computers cannot predict weather 3 days in the future. And here we are talking about predicting on the scale of decades.

FistOfFury108 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Interesting thread. "Each to his own". I personally feel the majority Jyotish people are just scamming money and controlling people by fear - basically by indicating that we have no control over our lives. However its funny to think that the same people who are saying that its all BS are probably being controlled by fear and the insecurity mainstrem media brings. Speaking from experience I have had one jyotish person seem to bring out accurate, very acurrate predictions in my life. The way this person did it was in a matter in which she was actually concerned and not doing for the money. Strange.... I did not believe it at the time, and it angered me, because it was concerning something negative happening in my life. But it happened, everything she said happened. I still cant be sure to say that all of it is complete BS or its absolutely true...its difficult to say. Maybe it was a placebo type effect.Who knows. On a personal level I do believe in the Vedic Literature...the esoteric teachings behind, that are deep and meaningful in people's lives. Unfortunately, it has been lost in false religions that want to control, and manipulate people via fear...and created for the purpose of money. I am still not sure about the truth behind Astrology...in my mind I feel there is "something" there at least.
Riley's Girl Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I don't put much stock in astrology as such, but I don't feel that I have enough experience or knowledge of the subject to tatally discount it either. Personally, I don't care what people choose to believe in. As long as they don't try to force their beliefs on me, I'll pretty much show respect and listen to what they have to say. I'm always fascinated by what people believe and why they do.

I am not just making up stuff from nowhere. There have been several instances of people having premonitions of what is going to happen in the future or ESP (Extra Sensory Perception). So, this ability of the mind to foretell the future isn’t a skill straight out of a fairy-tale movie. It happens frequently, in real life. My point is, there are several things about the human brain that neuroscience has yet to give definitive explanations for.

Marirs this is a sensitive topic, so anytime you want to stop this conservation let me know, if you are inclined to proceed further, here is what I have to say, ESP or more specifically prophecies are complete bull. When yu said there have been several instances can you give me specific examples? I will try to counter them.

And reg. specific examples, I don’t want post stuff from dodgy sources that might dilute our discussion. But I am all ears if you’re willing to throw light on this topic. Btw, have you ever heard about this book?

Btw, have you ever heard about this book? I have not read that book, but I know al koran was a famous mentalist, mentalism is one of those things which takes a lot of practice, but can and is done by a lot of magicians who actually accept, that what they are doing falls in the realm of explainable and known stuff. One such famous person currently out there is Criss Angel (I dont like him much for his shenanigans but he has very good integrity, so I do respect him for that). Can you give me a brief overview of the book?
