No format would please all the teams. We had a relatively easier opponent in Kenya during our semi final match in WC 03
but Kenya proved that they were no pushovers there by beating SL n pummeling higher place Zim(They were much stronger then) n BD n running Australia n India close.but even then they got lucky with a walkover from NZ they barely made it.saurely they were not the top 4 teams.but they got in S/F by two three performances n some luck n not luck alone

This is not a good format. Pak can lose to Aus,NZ & SL and can still make it to QF by beating minnows. Team like SA can win all games in group stage like in 96 & knocked out of the tournament for 1 bad game in QF. 1992 format was the best till date.

You are forgetting the possibility that this security will make Pakistan complacent to the point where they will lose to a minnow and get knocked out.

Good - 1. No minnow can sneak thro to the next round because of 1 upset. The losing big team can still go thro by winning against another big team. Bad - 1. Ideally, the 8 big teams just needs to win only against the 3 minnows to go thro to the QF. So possibility of winning the WC by winning against just 3 good teams is still on. 2. If there is no upset in a group, the 1st round matches have no importance i.e no big team will be put in do or die situation against another big team. This makes 42 out of the 49 games practically useless and less entertaining. 3.Basically, its a knockout trny like the 1st champions trophy. No weeding out the weakest link among the big teams. SA loss to WI in 96 was undeserved. Things like that has more chance of happening now. I think ICC wanted to make sure a repeat of 07 does not happen again ie. one of the big 4(Aus, Ind,SA,Eng) doesnt get knocked out early which would lead to a huge decrease in viewership. So they made this format but this is just horrible.

If you have a bad day in a tournament like the WC, you will lose. If the day is so bad that you can lose to a minnow, you simply don't deserve to win the cup. One can not hide behind bad days. Every sports event is like that. You have a bad day, you get knocked out. Cricket is no different. In a tournament like the WC, you don't get multiple chances to cancel out luck.
actually this format you do get multiple chances. one bad day won't knock you out, 2 or 3 will. and if you have 2 or 3 bad days, then one really don't deserve to win the cup. this format was chosen because the 07 format saw India and Pakistan get knocked out due to 2 bad days each. india lost to SL and Pak lost to WI.

get tired of beating them all the time. :cantstop:
If they get past the first rounds (which they have not done in 10 years), we will beat them again.

It is really a good format, In 1s stage few boring or one sided games are obvious (of course when we are including the minnows) but the good part is after 1st stage there will be neither any deserving team OUT nor any non-deserving team IN. Last time, the idea was initially extremly good that in 1st stage we just have 24 games in all(4*4 groups and 2 to qualify, so 3 games in stage 1 for each team), idea was to remove minnows quite early and make WC more entertaning, but IL and BD qualified and they simply spoiled the whole idea because now in stage 2, 11 games out of 24 were including either IL or BD, had Pak and Ind qualified, it could hv been called an extra ordinary format cz now we might hv 24/24 thrillers then.

I loved the 1996 World Cup and I approve of this format. A quarter final is what makes world cups so exciting. One bad day and you are knocked out. BTW India finishing 2nd(to RSA) in their group and Pak 3rd in theirs(behind Australia and Sri Lanka) is very likely. Which means B2 v A3 in the QF. :winky: Let's hope it's in Bangalore again. :D

To be honest, I dread this world cup, because it will be so so long and so so boring. That is the problem with 50 over cricket world cups, they just go on and on and on. Look at the football world cup, 32 teams and it's over inside a month. The cricket world cup is 12-14 teams and goes on for a year sometimes. The ICC need to learn from the huge successes of the 20-20 WCs, short tournaments, with hardly any breathing space, are the best way to go. None of this long and dull stuff they've been doing for so long.
