Ravichandran Ashwin

Did you see how Ashwin bowled during the WC - this was when other spinners were getting flogged on Australian phattas. Jadeja is no where near Ashwin's class' date=' SC or not.[/quote'] Didn't Tahir and Vettori also bowl equally well.. perhaps even better? Jaddu of course is a diff bowler compared to Ashwin; 1D but very good on the right sort of tracks.

Tahir and Vettori are used to bowling outside SC. If they couldn't bowl in these conditions, they wouldn't be in their national teams.

Tahir is No 1 for his consistent performances. But recent form wise, Ashwin is coming up. Needs more sample set. For eg - Tahir struggled against Bangladesh ODIs while Ashwin averaged 19 in that series (inspite of Bangladesh trying to play him off in ODI 2 and 3).

Tahir was probably not trying very hard. He raises his game against good competition. In that SA vs NZ semifinal for instance, he was the only bowler from either side who went as < 5 rpo. Ashwin has some way to go as a LOI bowler; still hasn't run through sides by capturing 4 or 5 wkt hauls.

They won't unless they are very good spinners, because Australian conditions are bad for spinners. For a SC spinner to finish among the leading spinners of the WC, it was a creditable achievement.

ODI performances of late have been very good.

What HAS Murali been smoking? :omg: The only man who took close to 6+ wkts per match after 50+ Tests was Murali himself.

India play an average of 10 tests/year. Let us say Ashwin plays for another ten years. So he could play 100 more tests, let us say 70 tests in favourable conditions and 30 tests in difficult conditions. Let us assume Ashwin can pickup 5 wkts/test in fav conditions and 3 wkts/test in unfav conditions (conservative estimate) - this works out to 70 X 5 + 30 X 3 = 440 wickets. He already has 140, so that works out to 580 wickets. If Ashwin does not go Bhajji's way Ashwin will get 600 wickets. Spinners reach their peak in their early-mid thirties and we may not have seen the best of Ashwin yet.

But, I don't see him taking 6 (esp 7) wickets over a sustained period of 100 Tests.

But if we prepare rank turners at home and Ashwin uses the SG ball...he can get more than 5 per match. I think Ashwin will get MUCH more than 3 wickets per test in SA, Eng and WI. Even in Australia, he has played 6 tests and got 21 wickets which is 3.5 wickets per test and it was a 10X weaker Ashwin. But its all speculation. Who knows when he will become over the hill or lose the amazing touch? It could be around 35 or 37 or 38 or 40?

If he had straighter one on more consistent basis against England India was winning both home and away series against them. The ball to dismiss Karunaratne was a treat.

He always had the straighter one. Arm ball. He just wasn't bowling in the right areas consistently against England. Would beat Cook with good deliveries but would give away singles and release pressure. Against Australia at home, he got back his accuracy and did well. Later when we toured Australia, he mastered flight and dip.

If we play 3-spin attack on raging turners, it is difficult for just one bowler to dominate; see e.g. WI pace quartet where max wkts per match was only 4.7 or so for Croft, and around 4 to 4.3 for the rest. Secondly, even he can be prone to losses of form. Started career very well against WI and others, and then, on home pitches, Captain Cook and co walloped him (one reason why we lost; since Pragyan Ojha was doing allright). Thirdly, getting wickets in SA and Eng won't be that easy - both will prepare green pitches when we tour, both to negate our spinner(s) and batsmen. WI yes.

One could claim the same for Yasir Shah, as long as he plays much of his cricket in UAE and SC. Only about 1/2 year in age separating them.

That he beat Cook with few odd deliveries doesn't mean much. Avg of 52 tells its own story; was also expensive going at 3.1 an over when Ojha went for 2.4 and Jaddu at 1.7; even the googly bowler Chawla (with no legbreaks) went at 2.8 and avg much better.
