That appeal by Sangakkara

The bowler bowls a gem. Viru is beaten and the ball zips past the outside edge. Sanga gathers the ball, claps over his head applauding the bowler for a great delivery. Everyone else nearly is at ease. 2/3 seconds pass in that and then Sanga notices that the bowler is actually appealing for caught behind. That's when Sanga breaks into some real hysterics of an animated appeal. That was some appeal for sure. Full of all emotions, anger, anxiety, disbelief, disappointment. He went on for sometime with some half hearted support from the bowler. And then came the look of total devastation. The absolute disbelief at the decision. As if that was a clear edge and the umpire is the only one who did not see it and that just ruined his entire life. I have no problems if players want to appeal on the slightest chance. It's their right and there is nothing wrong with it. What amuses me is the way Sanga enacted the whole thing with such sincere and genuine looking emotions. He not just appealed late after knowing that there was no edge just to support his bowler, but he went on to make it look like an extreme case of incompetence on the part of the umpire. This guy deserves some award for acting.

I feel cricket in Sri Lanka is played under different rules - they don't seem to give a damn about where the ball pitched, where it hit, what it hit before they start appealing.

That was an academy award winning performance from Sangakkara there. The way he seamlessly switched the expressions on his face from casual disappointment (due to ball missing the edge of the bat) to utter disbelief (coz the appeal was turned down..) was extremely impressive. If ever his batting and keeping skills let him down, Sanga has a promising acting career beckoning.

Well, even if there was an edge, he shouldnt have done something like that :D . He actually clapped his hand in appreciation and then, when he saw the bowler appealing, even he also started to appeal...it was showed clearly in the TV ;). He's not that good as an actor when you compare him to what the Aussies did against us downunder
