Karthik puts South in control Dinesh Karthik struck his second century of the match to put South Zone in firm control of the Duleep Trophy final against West Zone. More... Thursday 4th February 2010 Karthik puts South in control Dinesh Karthik struck his second century of the match to put South Zone in firm control of the Duleep Trophy final against West Zone. Karthik, who had slammed 183 in the first inninsgs, struck 150 today as South Zone declared their second essay at 386 for nine to set West a mammoth 536-run winning target. Chirag Pathak (41) and Harshad Khadiwale (8) guided West to 50 for no loss at stumps but South Zone have two full days to bowl out their opponents for an outright win. Resuming at an overnight 42 for no loss, South Zone suffered a mini-collapse and were at a precarious 71 for four before Karthik came to their rescue. The wicket-keeper batsman's 150 runs and a massive 247-run partnership with Muralidharen Gautam (88) virtually snatched the match away from West. Karthik's blazing knock came off just 162 balls and was studded with 22 hits to the fence. Gautam's 88 runs too came in reasonably quick time and he faced 118 balls, hitting eight fours and a six in the process. West Zone bowlers, including India discard Irfan Pathan, were largely ineffective when Karthik and Gautam were at the crease. Pathan eventually broke the stand when he dismissed Karthik off a wide delivery, which the right-hander cut straight to substitute fielder K Makvana. Gautam departed in the very next over when an attempted six over mid-off was acrobatically caught by Bhavik Thaker of Ravindra Jadeja's bowling. On an otherwise ordinary day for the West Zone bowlers, Dhawal Kulkarni shone with a five-wicket haul, conceding just 58 runs in 17 overs. Kulkarni dismissed the entire top half of South Zone's line-up but like the rest of his bowling colleagues, he too had no answer for Karthik's aggression today. Chasing the improbable target, West Zone were off to a confident start with openers Chirag Pathak and Harshad Khadiwale scoring briskly. Pathak was the more destructive of the two as he smacked seven boundaries and a six in his 27-ball 41. Harshad struck just two scoring shots -- both fours -- in his 28-ball knock so far. But with two days of play still remaining, West Zone will have to bat out of their skin to win the match. More... Dinesh Karthik dazzles again V.V. Subrahmanyam IN GREAT TOUCH: Dinesh Karthik took the centrestage again with his second century of the match. HYDERABAD: The brilliance and luck of Dinesh Karthik who went on to record his second century of the match, put South Zone on top on the third day of the five-day Duleep Trophy final here on Thursday. Dhawal Kulkarni bowled with fire in the morning session to raise hopes of a fightback by West Zone but were doused by Karthik and his teammates. South Zone, resuming at its overnight score of 42 for no loss, declared its second innings at 386 for nine, 21 minutes before scheduled close of play, and set its rival a daunting victory target of 536, with two more days to go. West Zone ended the day at 50 for no loss. No support Earlier, it was a pity that fast bowler Kulkarni did not find any support from the other end when he came up with a wonderful spell of 7-1-14-4 to rock the top order of South Zone. Using the early morning’s helpful conditions to perfection, Kulkarni swung the ball both ways. First, Kulkarni forced K.B. Pawan to snick a lovely outswinger into slip fielder Jadeja’s hands, then he re-arranged the stumps of Arun Karthik with a beauty of an inswinger. Soon, the dangerous-looking S. Anirudha became another victim of a teasing outswinger. Slice of luck Then, a huge slice of luck favoured Dinesh Karthik. After facing just one ball, he was squared up by one from Kulkarni that swung away and took the edge but Jadeja dropped a regulation catch at second slip. It was a miss which proved very costly and one which may cost the team the match. Karthik never looked back from then on but Kulkarni continued to torment the South batting by trapping Ganesh Satish leg before on the shuffle to reduce South to 71 for four. Except for that early lapse, Karthik (150, 162 balls, 22x4) held the centre-stage. He often walked into his strokes with authority on either side of the wicket. In the company of the free-stroking C.M. Gautam (88, 118 balls, 8x4, 1x6), he put on a 247-run stand off just 277 balls for the fifth wicket to ensure that West was pushed back on to the defensive once again. Karthik became only the third player and first-ever captain to hit a century in each innings of a Duleep Trophy final — the previous two being Lalchand Rajput for West Zone in 1986-87 (105 and 102 vs. South Zone) and Yuvraj Singh for North Zone in 2003-04 (106 & 148 vs. East Zone).

superb spell of bowling from Dhawal Kulkarni. He was moving both ways. If jadeja had taken that catch' date=' West would have been on top.[/quote'] Has anyone watched the match today? West seems to be batting pretty well with the lone wicket of Khadiwale falling and that too to part-timer Anirudha! Chirag Pathak is going strong on 72 while Jaffer, who came at #3, is on 15. I don't think west has any chance to chase down the mammoth 536 runs. Still Aushik Srinivas and reverse swing of the seamers are are key here.

Srinivas is getting a lot of turn. At 16, he looks very very promising indeed. Showing no signs of nerves despite bowling in a final of such a huge tournament. Barring some turn from Srinivas though, the pitch is playing well. Good bounce and coming on nicely on the bat. Pacers arent getting much help like they did in the first innings. A lot will depend on Jaffer, if he can anchor the innings. With Thakker, Yusuf, Irfan and Jadeja yet to bat, West are definitely in with a shout here though with such a huge total on board, South are the firm favorites. Should be very interesting indeed.
