Sehwag proves once again: Batting Strike rate matters a heck in tests.

Yeah..it seems blasphemous to criticize SRT here in light of any champion batter in the team. You don't get away from it without being hounded by his legion of fans. IT IS A FACT - That SEHWAG is the most influential test batter we have had since Gavaskar. Even before Gambhir came on to the scene as our next great bat , Sehwag's thunderous starts unsettled the best of oppositions and allowed the guys following to settle down.
Where is this influential batsman meter that is being judged to show ones influentialness?

That's patriots agenda - to drag down Sachin
I don't man. It is you guys who have raised him to a pedestal way above he deserves, with the silly obsession with his 3 figure marks, when another man has had a much greater impact since he became a regular in the Indian test team doesn't get a fraction of the credit.

Its nothing to do with that. But you seen to have a problem of dragging down other Indian players to make your point. Calling the innings of other players pathetic is quite ridiculous and childish and sounds like its coming from someone who has failed to understand the concept of team sports.

Nah. Just making the point that it is ok to score the runs but even in tests - the rate at which you score matters a great deal and if not for Sehwag's pace of scoring 160 - this match would have been a draw and all those centuries futile. Understood ? A great batsman cannnot NOT be dominant. And Sehwag just blows rest of the crowd out of the water. Forget his peers - he is not comparable to anyone in the history of the game - never has there been such a dominant opener - hell, never has there been such a dominant test batter ! And its just no the rate - he has scored as many or more runs in same number of innings, beating someone as great as SRT to 2K. 3K, 4K and 5K runs. He is about to beat SRT 7K runs as well to enter the 2nd spot in the all time list - all this at a pace that the best of ODI players score at in ODIS. Be it Pwnting or SRT.

No doubt Sehwag has had a massive impact. No doubt because of his many quickfire innings, we've managed to win games, but its not the biggest factor. Are you saying you can't win games unless you score at that rate? To prove your point you don't need to bring down other players. You may feel us Sachin fans give him more credit than he deserves. But I think thats nonsense, what Sachin has done for Indian cricket, will never be matched Cricketics made a good post earlier, which I think you should refer to. http://www.indiancricketfans.com/showpost.php?p=965251&postcount=34
Because the crazy middle order we have with the likes of tendulkar, laxman in it, Sehwag has had the licence to go crazy all the time which works. Now comparing Sehwag strike rate to tendulkar or say laxman's strike rate is just not on. When tendulkar and Sehwag or Laxman-Sehwag are batting, you would expect Sehwag to go after opposition's bowling with VVS scoring at a easy rate. Thats how it's work and thats how it has been working for our team India since the inclusion of sehwag in the test squad. Thats the reason why we are no. 1
If you've played cricket at any level, you'd know about partnerships and batting in pairs, complementing your partners game.

But for the bowlers, Sehwag's phaasst century would also have been futile. Should one start a thread saying there is no point in scoring any runs phaast or slow unless you have the bowlers to take 20 wickets?

Don't confuse. Because of our bowling we need more time to take 20 wickets - hence we need someone like Sehwag to give our bowlers that time. :winky: Look at the strike rate of our top 4 bowlers ( Zak, Bhajji, Ishant and Mishra) compared to top 4 of Australia or RSA and figure.

India in the late 90s minus Tendulkar would have suffered far more than today's side minus Sehwag. This is the comparison most supporters of India make sub-consciously, rightly or wrongly, and for this reason Tendulkar will always sit at the top of the tree.

Lets put an end to all this. If it wasn't for Tendulkar India would not have been the powerhouse in cricket it currently is. Tendulkar is a massive or probably the biggest reason for so much money coming into cricket in India. Imagine a whole generation growing up in India without Tendulkar, the biggest loss would have been no Sehwag and then there are countless other players who would not have taken up cricket because of no Sachin to inspire them. That is another reason why Sachin is held up so highly

On a side note.. are there any updates on ICC rankings .
Will be updated after the NZ BD match. Gambhir will lose his top spot and go to 4th or 5th. Viru will overtake Kallis, but it'll be touch and go whether he overtakes Jaya & Sanga to reach the top, but the greatest danger will be from Amla coming up from behind. Huge gain in points beckon. Never mind, we know who is the best batsman in the world right now. The South African bowlers know it, the Aussies know it and speak it aloud, the Pakistanis know it but would rather give up Sind & Balochistan than acknowledge it. Viru is the best batsman in the world again. And this time, please Lord, let him stay there, because he deserves it, if only so that people can pretend he is just another batsman- an understudy to so & so, and so & so, and so & so. We all know they are kidding themselves, and they know it too.

The opposition had just scored 296 @3.48 per over. India are carrying two batting passengers in their side. What does Sehwag do? Launch a murderous assault on Morkel and Steyn, on par with the butchery he unleashed on England at Mumbai in the final Test. Just as he had unnerved the English bowlers on that occasion, he drained the colour of the Proteas' new bowlers' rosy cheeks here. There was no respect, no quarters given, none asked for. They were so shellshocked, they forgot to bounce him. SA never recovered. That wasn't a 600+ pitch. But then, Viru is no ordinary batsman.
