I think there is a tendency to try to look around for too much and end up with nothing concrete. Munaf's better than many of those in action today but people complained abt his fielding and batting .... I think for Ind, it's time now to focus on primary skills and select the ones who are the best bowlers (and more likely to pick up wkts) We get too much in to the crap like X doesn't bowl that badly but he bats and fields better so we should have him. When we have one of the best batting line up (if not the best) and when we are playing at home such comments abt strengthening batting at #8 and below doesn't make too much sense especially when those selected don't do the best job of their primary function, i.e. bowling In short, Ind needs to play 4 specialists bowlers, the ones who are the best to do that job than anyone else around. If they still do badly then it's fair enough

Its official, Sreesanth is now THE most expensive ODI bowler in the whole world;

March 1, 2010 Posted by S Rajesh at 12:10 PM in Bowling Why is Sreesanth playing ODIs? 443472.jpg o start with, I must admit that I’ve always enjoyed watching Sreesanth bowl. He has a smooth, rhythmical action, has a classical side-on delivery motion, and, when he gets it right, the outswinger is wicked and a thing of sheer beauty. None of these things matter, though, when the format is limited-overs cricket, because then the rule is that Sreesanth will get clobbered no matter what he tries. When Sreesanth returned to the ODI team with much fanfare at the beginning of the year, I had my doubts. Sure, he’d taken five in an innings against Sri Lanka in a matchwinning performance in the Kanpur Test, but this was a different format. Consistency has never been his forte, and on these benign subcontinent pitches, I feared he would be ruthlessly exposed. And so it happened. Sri Lanka milked him for 47 off seven overs, while even Bangladesh too 54 and 53 off eight overs in the triangular tournament in Dhaka. More punishment from Sri Lanka in the final – none for 72 in 9.3. If anything, it got worse in the three-match home series against South Africa, with 74 and 83 runs – the fifth-highest for an Indian in ODIs – going off his nine overs in two of those matches. Which brings us to a pertinent question: should Sreesanth be considered at all for one-day cricket? Let’s look a little more closely at his ODI stats: he has bowled in 48 matches so far, and 15 times – very nearly one third of all innings – he has gone at seven runs an over or more. Another eight times he has conceded more than a run a ball. That means 23 out of 48 times – almost 50% - he has leaked in excess of a run a ball. In contrast only 11 times has he gone at less than five an over. Admittedly, his strike rate is reasonably impressive – a wicket every 34 balls – but his profligacy completely undoes his wicket-taking ability. Compare him with Irfan Pathan, who has the same strike rate but has an economy rate of 5.25, which is way better than Sreesanth’s 6.03. And we’re not even starting on the relative batting capabilities of the two. And did you know that Sreesanth belongs to a highly exclusive club of which he is the only member? Of those who’ve bowled at 1500 balls in ODIs, he is the only one with an economy rate of more than six. Which means Sreesanth in the team is excellent news for the opposition, but if I were MS Dhoni, I would much rather have him in my Test line-up than in the ODIs.
http://blogs.cricinfo.com/itfigures/archives/2010/03/_sreesanth_is_one_short.php#more Thats a damning stat. Its ok to say 'Oh well, these are flat pattas, everyone gets hammered'.. But seems like Sreesanth gets hammered more than most people. And who knows how much all this pummeling will affect his test form? Remember what happened to one Ishant Sharma?

There's a couple of things you have to notice here. 1) There's no denying that, as of today, all our pacers are getting clobbered. So, its a bit unfair to single our Santh. But the FACT is, even amidst all the clobbering, he is getting clobbered more than others. 2) Even during the times that preceded this demolition derby (2006-2008), Sreesanth still go clobbered, while the rest of our pacers were reasonable. If this does not convince someone of his absolute impotency when it comes to ODI bowling, nothing will. He could probably be picked as option when there's something in the pitch for the pacers, but when that does not happen, he's an absolute liability.

Sreesanth and Ishant should not play ODIs - Zaheer should quit after the WC. They are attacking bowlers at their best when they get batsmen driving. On these pattas where driving on the up is meat and drink, they do not have an evolved game to even marginally stem the flow of runs. Zaheer, P Kumar, Nehra, and Pathan should at the top of our ODI bowling plans. Pathan isn't going to stop the run flow much either, but at least he is a good batsman and fielder. Hopefully, over the next couple of seasons Sreesanth and Ishant are able to develop more thought and variety in their game.

agree completely.infact i have said earlier that there should be seperate pool of 5 bowlers each for tests n LOIs.only Zak should be common.Sree,Ishant,Tyagi,RP should form the test pool n they should concentrate on speed,swing n reverse swing.while Irfan,PK,Vinay Kumar,Nehra should be our ODI bowlers who concentrate on bowling yorkers n slower balls n bowling to the fields

As I had mentioned earlier, the risk you run by going into a match with just two specialist pacers is that your best bowler(spinner) might get clobbered early (7th or 8th over). So if that happens, who do we turn to for damage control? Our ability to defend targets depend on two things. a) Our pacers picking up early wickets or b) Our spinners putting the brakes on scoring in the middle overs. So, even if 'a' doest not happen, we can always bank of 'b' to bail us out. By going into a match with just 2 pacers, you might entirely lose out on the 'b' option. Also, with the batting powerplay now being employed in the middle/death overs, that is more reason to have an extra seamer since its an acknowledged fact that it is always easier to go after the spinners when the field is up. I doubt if we will EVER go into match with just pacers. It is probably something that is worth trialling, but even half-decent batting attacks will brutally expose the strategy.
i disagree.if u r good u can contain even if u r a spinner.if u r crap.u will leak runs.the faster it comes,the faster it goes

No team has as crappy pacers as we have n variety of good spinners.I have seen Saeed Ajmal bowl during powerplays but i guess thats not a great example:cantstop:

No team, how good or bad their spin/pace attack, ever uses spinner in PP overs with regularity. You can really take to to a spinner, how good or bad he is, with the field up and once that happens, that can really leave your bowling plan for the rest of the innings in total disarray.

well i think some body like Jadeja can do the holding job well in power plays with his darts.atleast he wont be as expensive as our pacers.plus two attacking spinners for middle overs,its not such a bad option as for team using spinners in PP,teams r still getting used to it.most teams get the timing of thier PP wrong.i am sure as more n more ODI cricket is played,teams will adjust n u'll see spinners bowling regularly in powerplays
