This is what testing the bench strength and giving them experience is all about. If they were as good or as experienced as the players they replaced wouldn't they be in the first choice XI? This is how a career and ability is developed. They'll learn from the experience of playing against a good bowling attack chasing a big score and build upon it in future games. If they aren't able to learn and grow, they will be dropped and others given a chance. Some of you guys are making out as if they were deliberately hitting the ball to the fielders, why would any batsman do that? It's not always easy to score runs fluently against good bowling and fielding. They are not Sehwag or Tendulkar who are going to take Steyn for 9 runs per over, at least not yet. Even a player like Dravid took a fair amount of time before he could develop his ODI game. I do agree that Rohit probably should not have been in the team, though.

I remember he was thrown out of the team also because of his slow innings in ODI cricket. But he came back and came back well.

What criticism? You are calling them selfish. That doesnt come under criticism. If you have proofs that they are selfish then post them otherwise GTFO here. And learn to appreciate other teams also. South Africa played better and won. And its not all about one team always.
Dude you're the one going OTT. There IS a difference between selfishness and match fixing. Don't pretend one implies the other.

Actually partnership was fine, but one of htem should have carried it all the way. If you see the comparison, we were ahead of SA even at 40 over mark. What was needed someone playing run a bal 120 runs and one guy playing blinder 80 off 50. Raina almost played that blinder. We lost because we lost too many wickets.

Regarding the bolded part..they certainly weren't anywhere near SA score after 20 overs. Sure they caught up after Raina and Jadeja had their partnership.

The Outsider - I agree they are not Sehwag or Sachin or Yuvraj But, in a big chase of 350+(nowadays/earlier it was 300+), the match is more or less decided in the first 15-20 overs In the last 20 overs, we needed about 200 runs even after a few sixes hit during that time. After the two departed, there was little chance for others to settle in and appraoch that target. It was jet set go, 99% it will be a failure I admit selfish is a bit harsh on them, but it surely looked like it, for one who watched the match actually, stats can tone it down, checking the scorecard The duo used around 64 dot balls (most were in PP)

Good that you admit it. And it didnt look like that sorry. Thats called rebuilding the inning after losing two wickets early. You can say that they were overcautious but selfish?

Rohit is trying to resurrect his career. Not surprised he was focused on getting his own score to a decent level. If you look at the end of the game and when people compare stats etc, Rohit's slower 40+ would look better than Vijay's faster 25. So I would say mission accomplished.

I don't think so. Did the innings of 40+ with SR of 78 when chasing 360+ total make rohit look any good? Even after playing more than 40 ODIs that guy still doesn't how to rotate the strike and build the ODI innings. I wouldn't call him selfish but that's the way he plays and refuse to learn

Seriously calling them selfish is a bit too much. But fans will be fans, even Sachin was called selfish at some point, Dhoni, Dravid, It's Kohli's turn now, won't be long when people will be praising him, maybe after 2 years.

You were pretty gung-ho about Kohli before this series. How do you assess him now? It is not just Kohli, any newcomer has to play for a reasonable amount of time for us to assess their strengths and weaknesses. During one of the two matches he played against Australia he did not show the nous to play risk-free cricket and yesterday he should have taken some risks against the weaker bowlers to keep up with the req. run-rate but he didn't. Earlier, in the first ODI his subdued innings cost us about 20-25 runs. Sure, he will learn but he is not really as quick a learner as you seem to think he is.

Kohli batted with a stirke rate of 80. Not that he was playing tuk tuk for 20 overs and scored at 40-60 strike rate. We lost 2 wickets first up. Some p'ship was supposed to be made Had he gone for big runs and gotten out, people would have been like "He got the opportunity and he messed it up." He played according to the situation. He didn't bat great, offcourse he had batted really great he would have won the match for us, but he no where looked pathetic or whatever words people are using it to describe his batting.

this is exactly what u get from Nohit.i always said hes good for tests.but he didnt deserve any recall at all.i hope selectors dont give this knock too much heed n also look at his SR n drop him. Kohli was slow too but he makes up for it generally.he got a good one from Steyn at the wrong time.was looking good

Selfish duo? What did you expect the two of 'em to do? Put on 200 in 25 overs and win the match with 5 overs to spare? If anything, if you're serious Indian fan, you had lotsa reasons to be pleased by their approach. They knew they had a big total to surmount, but they didnt panic and go for hell for leather after the bowling. They put a price on their wicket and batted sensibly. Sure, it might have been a tad slow for this match, but it is this kind self-preservationist, non-glamorous approach that will take us to victories in other moderate chases, not the slam-bam-thank-you-Mam approach that some people here wanted this pair to take. For all their so called defensive batting, the fact is, we were still ahead of South Africa at the 40 over mark. Our biggest problem wasnt so much the reqd. RR, but the loss of so many wicket. If you want to fault both Kohli and Rohit for something, it is that they threw their wickets away at crucial points. Rohit's dismissal was particularly weak and soft. It seemed as though he got too defensive in his mindset. Virat Kohli has matured wonderfully in the last few months. The evolution in his game from the days when he used to attack too early is so easy to notice. He has the talent and skill-set to be the PERFECT middle order batsmen. But things are not so rosy for Rohit. He still seems to be confused to as to what approach to take, when he's batting in the middle.

Selfish or not, the approach by Kohli and Rohit was confounding and lacked logic. When you are chasing 365 you cannot have two batsmen playing the consolidating role simultaneously for that long. One of them should have gone after the bowling taking calculated risks for us to remain in the game but neither Kohli nor Rohit showed the intent. Ultimately their partnership ended any chance India had of winning the game. Pointing out the fact that we were ahead of South Africa at the 40th over when we were 8 wickets down is laughable. We lost wickets in trying to compensate for this pair's incomprehensibly overcautious approach.

I do think it was dhoni's call to stabilize the innings after we lost two wickets early.I dont think a youngster can slow it down to his pace without a captains consent.Selection of the team is done by thje selectors, but I do think the final eleven has to be made by dhoni and may be kirsten.Remember nayar didnt get chance to play even if he was in the team since dhoni was not confident of his bowling. But really rohit had to atleast play the gaps to singles.KohliI cant blame him much for its his style of play. But rohit being a big hitter he should have taken some chances.Eitherway he is not goin to be in the side when our regulars r back.Kohli had nothing to prove since he is world no.21 batsman.

The showed they couldn't assess the match situation and pick the best approach. I can understand getting your eye in, but they waited too long before looking to score and once the RRR is in the vacinity of 8-9, every over you don't get close to that its jumping up quickly
