Umesh Yadav replaces injured Praveen Kumar Unheralded Vidarbha pacer Umesh Yadav will fly to the West Indies on Friday to replace Praveen Kumar , who was ruled out of the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup due to a side strain. "Praveen Kumar has sustained a side strain and has been ruled out of the ICC World T20 2010, as a result. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked Umesh Yadav as his replacement," Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement. Praveen, who had played both the group matches against Afghanistan and South Africa , sustained the injury during a practice session at the 3Ws Oval on Thursday and the Indian team management sent him for an MRI, which revealed a a tear in abdomen muscle. Interestingly, Yadav was not part of the pool of 30 probables. He now needs a nod from the tournament's technical committee, which is expected to be a formality. congrats umesh he bowled well but me thinks he is there only because of simmons in DD i thought Dinda was also impressive was in the thirty man squad and can be fast as well how long might have gotten a raw deal there but umesh isn't a bad choice perhaps a little bit too raw !

I dont remember seeing him a lot. I remember he was quicker than normal Indian bowlers but his stats doesnt suggest he was that good. Why are so many people happy about his selection and why did he play only 7 games in IPL?

yeah looks like selectors have jumped the gun.his IPL stats r not that good n infact,Dinda,Trivedi,Harmeet have better stats.infact this was a perfect opportunity to strengthen our batting n chose Irfan. wat puzzles me once they have selected him,why not send him straightaway why wait for a day?he could have been an option for todays game

On Friday, the man who wasn’t even on the list of India’s 30 probables for the World T20, will be on a flight to the Caribbean — the latest recruit in the squad. An unexpected vacancy in the pace department arose after an abdominal muscle injury ruled Praveen Kumar out of the tournament. When it came to deciding on a replacement, opener Gautam Gambhir suggested Yadav to skipper M S Dhoni. Gambhir was backed by Eric Simmons — bowling coach of both India and the Daredevils — and senior paceman Ashish Nehra, also from the Daredevils. Four years ago, when Yadav hitched a truck ride to Nagpur from his village to play a game of tennis ball cricket, he wouldn’t have dreamt where the 25-km journey might take him. Packing his bags in a mad rush on Thursday, Yadav was in a daze. But those who know him were saying they always felt his raw, natural pace would fast-track him to international cricket. “I have just collected my tickets from the Vidarbha cricket office, it still hasn’t sunk in. My parents are very excited but nervous as well. They are village people and have very little idea of the world outside. All my father asked was ‘When will you return home?’,” Yadav told The Indian Express after getting the most important call of his short cricketing career. Had it not been for a chance sighting by former Vidarbha player Pritam Gandhe, Yadav would likely still have been a star on the local tennis-ball circuit, and not someone answering Team India’s SOS from the West Indies. “It was 2008. I was passing by a maidan, when a young boy bowling at terrific speed caught my eye. The first thing that caught my eye was his pace. His action was fine but he had to change his run-up. I invited him to the Ranji Trophy nets and he was soon playing first class cricket,” said Gandhe. The sporting graduation did not trigger excitement at Yadav’s home. “My father had no interest in the game. All he told me was that I should something in life so that I earn a decent living. They are people with modest dreams,” he said. During Yadav’s first season in 2008, he was drafted by Air India. By the time the season ended, he was in the Central Zone team. In 2009, in a Duleep Trophy game against South Zone, he beat two of the country’s technically best-equipped batsmen, Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman, for sheer pace in a spell of 5/76. The national selectors ticked his name for future reference, while Delhi Daredevils talent scouts included him in the squad. But an injury during a warm-up game before IPL 2 in South Africa resulted in a six-month break from the game. He returned in 2010 to a modest season, at the end of which he was picked for the Board President’s XI team that played South Africa. It was in the just-concluded IPL 3 that Yadav really got noticed. He wasn’t among the top wicket-takers, but his pace caught everyone’s eyes. A national selector who picked Yadav as Praveen’s replacement said, “We didn’t want a 120-125 kph kind of bowler. We wanted someone who could surprise the batsmen. Yadav a great bouncer and a yorker that he can bowl at 140 kph.” Gandhe is confident that his ward is ready for the big league and can be national team regular. Yadav, in contrast, is still a man of modest dreams. “My father has to work really hard in the mines all day. My dream is to make his life comfortable. Maybe I will bring him to Nagpur.
