DK's apparent lack of intent on the ZIm tour was appalling to see. A couple of big scores at the top of the order could have sealed him a spot in the national side. But surprisingly he showed absolutely no energy on the field. No encouragement for the bowlers from behind the stumps and even when he was batting, looked very muted rather than his own bubbly self. But everytime after getting dropped, the guy has always gone back to domestic cricket, plundered runs and comeback to the team. Am quite confident he will do th same this time as well. Is much better than all other options we have after Dhoni.

As a reserve WK, DK isn't bad and he is a decent batsman too (though he has to work on his consistency to be playing as a specialist bat)

I am very very disappointed with Dinesh Karthik. He has the talent. In fact I rate him as a better Test batsman than Dhoni in the longer form of the game. He has way too many shots than Dhoni. But then because he lacks Dhoni's temperament he loses out. That is understandable when you are new to international cricket. But that cannot happen eternally. India is losing a good opportunity to have competition for the wicket keeper-batsman role. Competition is always good. Talking about competition, Karthik is again a far more athletic and technically better keeper than Dhoni. But the truth is Dhoni is safer and steadier. He makes fewer mistakes. Karthik's flamboyance cannot compensate for the easy chances that he puts down or the stumpings that he misses. The TN cricketer has to give himself a kick and get his act together. There seems to be nobody on the horizon. Naman Ojha deserves a try definitely. This entire situation is of Karthik's own making.

He is not good enough to take a proper batsman slot in the team. But he is good enough as a wicket-keeper batsman. But unfortunately, that role doesn't exist in the international cricket anymore. Dhoni has the keeper slot and as such Karthik will always be only the back-up. So even when he gets picked up, he cant get a proper position in the line-up. One cant use this as an excuse for his failures. Ever since Dhoni, most batsman have been moved around in the line-up. He has been given enough chances before and after Dhoni and its his own fault that he didnt grab his chances. He is still in his 20's and 2nd in the pecking order after Dhoni and will get many more chances. So there is still a chance for him.

It doesnt matter if he is infinitely more talented than Dhoni if he fails in all other areas. What really matters is the the runs they get. Batting in tests requires a multitude of attributes and whatever makes you think that Karthik is better than Dhoni is just not enough. He can work on his game, come back and be better. That is still a possibility as he is still relatively young. But right now, Dhoni is the #1 keeper batsman in India in all formats of the game.

People talking about Uthappa as w/k. Is he a regular keeper or is he a make shift wicket keeper in the Rahul Dravid mould? If he is the latter why would you even consider him an option? Creating yet another bits and pieces player? Edit: I found the answer on his CI profile.

At one time a wicketkeeper-batsman, Uthappa has since given up the big gloves to concentrate on batting, and now occasionally bowls mediumpace

Rohit is one of the most "talunted" batsman we have seen in the last couple of years..He is still nohit sharma. Talent has to be backed up with runs, otherwise it is useless. Karthik has played 23 tests compared to Dhonis 43. Remember Karthik was tried before Dhoni came into the team. He did play a couple of good innings but they were followed by a few bad ones. Again regarding the consistency of playing, he was our keeper, then was dropped in favor of Dhoni and Dhoni grabbed his chance. What do you expect Karthik to get now? Only the games the Dhoni doesnt play. He lost his chance. Now the onus is on Karthik to perform in the 1 or 2 games he gets a temp spot, not on the selectors to make him permanent.

Im getting drawn into this Karthik v/s msd debate...I think Karthik is technically a better keeper and a better batsman than Dhoni without the stats..He is much more talented and elegant but Dhoni is a much more effective keeper and batsman..It doesnt matter how gifted you are, if you dont convert them into runs or wickets in cricket..and thats where Dhoni scores heavily over Karthik,his utility! Having said that, it is elementary that we nurture young talents and keep them interested...Karthik is the best back up keeper-batsman we have, and he will contiue to get his chances...and then its upto him, how he wants to be remembered for the rest of his life!

lol Dk is is light years behind Dhoni i am just talking of is it time to try some other back up ? give him chances when Dhoni is out Asia Cup may be ok but going into the world cup without a reserve keeper ? will they allow a replacement ? what if Dhoni is unfit only for a couple of matches ! Karthik just doesn't cut it as a WK batsman he has had so many chances ! unless we are willing to risk someone like uthappa/raydu i don't see a decent keeper batsman reserve except praying DK starts performing.
