Gunner_Mania Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 What is wrong with the Indian domestic cricket? Why should these players only play in English county and develop? Ranji trophy is good enough to develop cricket don't you think in particular the bowlers. We have that in NZ in abundant. Tailor made pitches for the seam bowlers make them bowl dibbly dobbly balls and still get wickets. When they go overseas with less assistance in the air and off the pitch the bowlers come a cropper. There have been many bowlers English cricket has dished out and have been pushed back to oblivion. James Kirtley, Tremlett and the likes come to mind. Anderson is now successful but he has not gone better with more stint in English county cricket but just by experience. County cricket is demanding and provides players opportunities to play almost every day but that's about it. The quality of cricket is still not the best in county cricket barring a few. There are so many mediocre players in county cricket as well. Whatever happened to Monty Panesar? He's been playing fair bit of county cricket. How come his form deserted him? In fact it is the other way around, after the central contract was put in place England has been doing much better. I don't think the suggestion is avoid Indian domestic season and play county. Its play both, Most of the county season is when the domestic season is off in India. Murali Kartik plays in the IPL, County season and also for Railways in India's domestic circuit.

Don't worry about IPL just stick to English county. I guess it's fine for Pakistan given their terrible domestic cricket structure but not for India, Australia or South Africa. Name one decent spinner England has produced in the last few decades? Swann, Monty, Emburey, Edmonds and Robert Croft :haha: That's about it. The Pakistan Cricket Board is a prime candidate for reviving the Carry On series, so farcical are some of its decisions, but if they want to do something right, they should tell Mohammad Irfan, the seven-foot giant, to forget about the Kolkata Knight Riders and look to England instead.
Gunner_Mania Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I would never suggest that, but I think it helps all sub continent players to have at least one stint on the county circuit - IF they get an opportunity simply because it helps them to get a taste of the conditions. Similarly even if they get a chance to play some domestic cricket in Aus or NZ even if it is just twenty 20 it will always help them. Its like you said about Anderson, Finn, Swan et all. just because they dont come to India to improve their skills of bowling on flat pattas and dust bowls, doesnt mean that we shouldnt let our bowlers to enhance their skills in swing and seam conditions.

Agree with that wholeheartedly, players should not look at just playing in England. They should look at playing anywhere really, in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and the likes. Meanwhile if English cricket has to improve they should look at sending their players overseas rather than just playing on the juicy tracks at home. Their batsman need to learn to play on bouncy, low, slow and spinning tracks as well. Meanwhile they should develop spinners and not just hope Swann will forever be as good as he is right now. Everyone loses form and it's a matter of time he will also struggle but England will have none in the bench to make up.
Serani Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Look at the Wi team of the 70's and 80's! All of them played county from a young age, now we only have Chesney Hughes playing county and that too because he has a British passport.
putrevus Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 this guy is just nuts if county cricket is so great why is it not producing great talent, why is england team looking like united nations, what great talent has emerged from county, We all saw how great Marcus North is, he played countless county seasons still is at sea when ball is swinging. This just pure nonsense from a writer who lives in England and still think this is same system of 80s where every top player in world was playing because they had no other avenues. Piyush and Sreesanth played in county cricket what improvement have they shown,Zaheer became better because he became matured enough to understand his body and was willing to work on his skills.Zaheer Khan is not lighting up odis/t20 with his bowling performances. IPL will never produce a great talent either because of its format, T20 will always only produce Yusuf Pathans/Jadejas and not Rahul Dravids. Selectors who select these players based purely on IPL performances should be sacked.

Quoting from his article, he doesnt say that county cricket is great, on the contrary he says the standard is not as good as it used to be. standard perhaps isn't what it once was He lives in India, not in England, he only grew up as a kid in England:) OTOH this is written in an UK news paper for a UK audience..so make wjat you will of it...

The "united nations" all learned there cricket in counties you nob! You really think KP would have been so good if he stayed in the South African system? joker. Also Marcus North was a failure in his county stints which is probably why he fails.

The struggles of Pakistan's callow batting line-up in England, and the toothlessness of India's pace bowlers in Sri Lanka straightaway make one wonder just how much they'd benefit from a finishing school that helped the likes of Vivian Richards and Richard Hadlee. Is he not contradicting himself with this kind of statements then, he says country will hone skills of players and quotes improvement of players in 1980s. He is forgetting one very important fact there are no viv richards and richard hadlees playing in county crickets now a days so his very premise of honing skills doesn't arise. On contrary it will create more problems like Marcus North who will bash mediocre bowling present in county cricket now a days and create more problems for selectors because they cannot judge a players just from their gaudy stats of county cricket. Andrew Hall captaining a county side is all we need to know how good county cricket is, Murali karthik whines about not getting enough recognition for his county performances but he is forgetting the fact his performances in ranji trophy/domestic circuit carry more weight and he has done nothing spectacular there to warrant his selection.
Serani Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 You laughing at county and "mediocre bowling". Im watching the England u19 vs SL and the england openning bowler Matt Dunn has bowled every ball at over 90MPH, yes thats right some kid who has yet to play a first class game is faster than all Indian bowlers :hysterical: :haha: :giggle: This guy would probably be playing tests if he was Indian.
Chandan Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Counties have approached Indian players, its BBCI who've then denied them the opportunity to play elsewhere. And I'm sure not all players will be worried too much about the money, I'm sure there are some who would like the experience and challenge. And its not like they get paid minimum wage or something playing for counties Counties had approached top players like Sehwag, Yuvraj and Tendulkar, not young guns like Pujara Rahane, Mukund or Dhawan. The top guys are already under immense workload and neither need IPL riches nor county rags to make their career. They are finished articles till now. And BCCI was absolutely 100% to deny them the decision. As for Chawla, he is already playing in the A tours in England and EPT in Australia. If he has any skills, it can be honed there. Isn't the logic the other way around ? You go to county, you hone your skills, you improve your overall game after which you will get selected by the franchises. I know thats not how the selection for the IPL franchises was made but still, :dontknow: You need to hone your skills when you are young, not when you are 32 years old and have played nearly 80 test matches. Just tell me which Indian players can be hired by the counties to hone their skills?

Ram Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Its unfair to ask professional sportsmen, who shelf life is extremely short, to forego rewards that monetary or otherwise and sacrifice for the largers interests of the nation/team. If they do such a thing, like VVS did by foregoing 100s of 1000s dollars to settle for a much lesser lucrative IPL contract so that his team could buy more players, then that’s great. But if they don’t, that should not be held against them. Every individual has the inalienable, indisputable right to look out for themselves. That applies more so for sportsmen, whose career often ends before they touch their mid 30s. That said, if someone like Ishant Sharma is really smart and discerning, he’d probably realize by now that his commercial prospects are directly proportional to his performances in Indian colors. If he takes wicket in the international arena and wins matches for us, his IPL demand will go up, so will hia appearances his commercials. At a very limited level, the team management/board should have some influence on how the younger players, who sometime be a bit misguided, go about their priorities. Ultimatley, its all upto the individual.

You really think KP would have been so good if he stayed in the South African system? joker. Also Marcus North was a failure in his county stints which is probably why he fails. you are an idiot ,county cricket is biggest crap , all your united nations team learned cricket somewhere else and county cricket has nothing to do with their skill level. I already had this discussion with you. How did Graeme hick/ Mark Ramprakash do, they were bashing your cheap county cricket bowlers all over the place and the moment they played on international stage they showed how crap they really were and how inflated and worthless their county stats were.So don't give me this nonsense about county cricket. If Marcus North was a failure why was he playing with so many counties then it again shows county cricket has no talent that is why he was playing for so many counties year after year. this is not 1980s where in west indies had so much surplus talent that it could not find place for all of them and that very fact combined with money offered by county cricket was better than any other country at that time there was no SA then all those players were playing in county cricket then.
Serani Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 so why did u mention him in this thread:dontknow: It shows the strength of county cricket that an 18 year old that bowls 90MPH at will cant get into the side, and a poor Surrey side at that.
