lethal_raina Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Irfan Pathan - The Baroda all-rounder is still the best available and can balance the team out with seam-up stuff and useful batting at the crucial No. 7 position. Robin Uthappa - The kind of mayhem he can cause was evident in the IPL and it would be well worth a try to check one more time if he can do the same for India in the ODIs. If need be, he can keep wickets as well. Piyush Chawla - In comparison to Amit Mishra, Chawla has more variety and looks much more likely to perform the role of leggie in the Indian World Cup squad. Ambati Rayudu - He transforms his positives vibes into breathtaking strokes and if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli keep failing, Rayudu is a quality replacement in the offing. Naman Ojha - He was in the Indian team to Zimbabwe earlier in the year. Though the shy wicketkeeper/batsman didn't perform as expected, he is not far behind Dinesh Karthik in calibre.
Lord Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 not sure about Chawla, Rayudu n Naman,i'd rather try Dhawan,Ashwin n Manish Pandey agree about other two
diegovegaz Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 uthappa, irfan must be given a chance even chawla could be tried as well rayadu will be too new for international cricket we hv all seen ojha doesn't belong to this level more importantly, ashwin should get a few games, abhishek nayar should be in the scheme of things too
Sachinism Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 not sure about Chawla, Rayudu n Naman,i'd rather try Dhawan,Ashwin n Manish Pandey agree about other two Manish has a lot to prove yet before getting a chance
Lord Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Manish has a lot to prove yet before getting a chance well hes talented for sure,n is an aggresive sorta guy, also brilliant fielder.
Sachinism Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 well hes talented for sure' date='n is an aggresive sorta guy, also brilliant fielder.[/quote'] But he was just out with India A and had a horrendous tour
Lord Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 But he was just out with India A and had a horrendous tour yeah,I know, but I think he would alright on flat decks of India.
The Outsider Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Uthappa and Irfan should definitely be tried out. On Indian pitches, Flathappa can absolutely massacre attacks in the batting PP after the 38-40th over or so. And Irfan should be in the mix as well because as a batsman he is much better than Yusuf and Jadeja. But it's only due to the fact that India have not fielded a full strength ODI side for ages now that things are looking so unsettled. There is very little scope to pick a lot of newer players. Tendulkar, Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Raina, Nehra, Zaheer, Harbhajan, and P Kumar pick themselves. That only leaves 4 spots in a squad of 14. One would be a back up spinner - Ojha or Ashwin. One would be a back up pacer - Ishant or someone else One would be all rounder - Jadeja, Yusuf, or Irfan One would be another batsmen - Rohit, Uthappa, Karthik, or Kohli
thevortex Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Piyush Chawla does not have more variety than Mishra. At the moment, Mishra seems to have lost his wrong one - or at least the vicious turn with his wrong one. Chawla on the other hand looks capable to take wickets only with his wrong one. He does not have a leg break to speak of. But yes, limited overs are a different cup of tea. He could very well be a good defensive bowler. A defensive bowler does not necessarily need variety. If he is very consistent.

Online Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Rayudu played very well for MI but batting is not the problem, bowling and an all rounder is.
saneindian Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 A few good knocks in the CL t20 will surely get Uthappa a place in the national side (Rohit hasn't helped his cause by a few failures after those twin 100s in ZImbabwe). With him sure to play as a keeper as well, in all probability he will comeinto the team as Kartik's replacement (someone who could keep/open if needed and be also a successfull lower order batsman). Irfan will need to do very well in the corporate cup and challenger trophy for making a comeback.
The Outsider Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 are u sure squad would be of 14 only?I thought u could pick 16 Yeah, looks like 15 are allowed. So we'll probably pick another batsman in that case. i am pretty sure none of them are even remotely in consideration atm.Irfan and uthappa are in the doghouse of Mr Srikanth. Flathappa has been injured ever since the IPL ended. When was the team supposed to try him out? He has missed out on international series, A tours, and emerging players tournaments where second stringers were tried. Can hardly blame the selectors for it. Irfan's case is baffling when the likes of Munaf and Vinay Kumar have been selected.

Fontaine Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Irfan's case is baffling when the likes of Munaf and Vinay Kumar have been selected. I think, for once, the selectors have done a good job with Pathan. They kept bringing him back and giving him chances in T20/ODI when he was struggling with his new action. He's gone back to his old action for that past year or so. Give him plenty of time to earn his recall rather than just being brought in the side. I can't tell you how disapointed I the last time he played for us in the NZ tour when he couldn't bowl the ball with an upright seam. Almost every delivery was a scrambled seam with absolutely no movement in the air or off the deck and he was bowling hit me balls to guys like Ryder/Taylor.

goose Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Given so many of our bowlers including Pathan , Zaheer, Ishant, Praveen, and Harbhajan, to name a few, had dream starts to their careers, going downhill thereafter, it makes sense, does it not, to field at least one never before seen bowler. It's a tactic that seems to keep serving SL well.
