Re: A Picture says a 1000 words A haunting picture of the last Mughal ruler of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar. A man who would see his entire kingship dismantle right in front of his eyes. A man whose face would be on the coins of the state but reigns was in hands of Anglicans 7 seas away. A man who lost 15 of his 17 kids during 1857 revolt, was captured and sent to prison to Rangoon where he died. It remains to be seen how an India that celebrates its 150th anniverssary of Sepoi mutiny this year, treats the person who was picked by sepoys as their leader. 300px-BahadurShah_Zafar.jpg In his own words.... Umr-i daraaz maang ke laaye the chaar din Do aarazu mein kat gaye do intizaar mein Hai kitana badanasiib Zafar dafn ke liye Do gaz zamiin bhii na milii ku-i yaar mein ku-i-yaar - land of the beloved ( a hint towards how Zafar could not even have the "luxury" of being buried at home...lets see if we get him back). xxx

Re: A Picture says a 1000 words Reminds me of a line that I liked a lot in one of the books Conversations with God, "You've got me all wrong", it is so true. We have this image and blame it for everything bad before examining our own actions.

Re: A Picture says a 1000 words Yup the photo by Anakin was very disturbing and depressing. No wonder the photographer committed suicide after couple of months of taking the photo. I had seen this photo few years ago and felt sick for couple of days. Something that I realised that day was how to be content with what you got. I'm not saying being ambitious is wrong but that one picture is a thrash on selfish and money hungry people. It only makes you realize how good was your upbringing, roots and the nation you grew in. That also teaches you not to nit pick little issues and get along with life. Thank all those that have contributed us to reach a state where we don't have to struggle for food and shelter. No way can anyone eradicate poverty and hunger from the world. Great Buddha couldn't do that and realised that's life.

Hmm I did not know that. I can certainly see the impact taking such a picture can have on a person. I mean it is fair to say that the photographer would not have taken merely this picture and would in all actuality spent a while at such places snapping away as little children looked around for food. How do you escape that haunting image later on? It takes a lot of courage, and shameful courage at that perhaps. Little wonder then that while Satyajit Ray was castigated as Director who would showcase India's poverty, few had the actual gumption to sit through an entire SR movie and understand his point of view. xxx

I'm not very well educated on these matters to comment but just a little logical question. How are we sure our ancestors were perfect? How do we know one of our fore fathers wasn't a murderer? That wouldn't make me a murderer does it?

It is also a bit surprising why the photographer didn't carry the kid over to the UN food camp a kilometer away. It is possible there were more than just one kid crawling to the UN food camp. It is impossible to carry hundreds if there were hundreds. I think the photographer must have shot just one depressing scene among several. A person that committed suicide couple of months ago I would think would have done his best help as many as possible.
