India's #1 rank in Test Matches / ICC Rankings

The annual Test rankings were published last week. They showed that India are easily the best side in the world on 130 points, a massive 11 ahead of South Africa in second place. Nobody believes this to be a true reflection of the teams' abilities. South Africa drew a Test series in India late last year, India played only nine Test matches in the entire year. India have had a tough time of it in Sri Lanka this past month and have suffered for it a little in the table. Yet still they stay top. The tables are calculated based on the most clinical statistical evidence accrued from results of matches played in the previous four years. But for all this, the gut feeling is that the statistical evidence, as so often, is far from convincing. No doubt this will cause apoplexy among statisticians who cannot allow emotion, sentiment or indeed gut feeling to cloud their work. So England have won five Test matches in a row, they hold the Ashes, they drew a series in South Africa. And still there are supposedly four better teams. Still, if they beat Pakistan 3-0, or 4-0, as seems probable, they will nudge ahead of Australia. mf.gifemailthis2.gifbookmark.gif a2.img More...

Strange logic this.... India last beat Aussies 2-0. England has lost to India 1-0 at home. India has drawn vs England in the last test series at home. India has drawn the series against SL in SL now and have beaten SL at home in the test series. India has beat NZ at home and away. India has won the last test series' against WI both at home and in West Indies. Now how is that not logical to have India sitting at no.1? However you look at it India has surged ahead of rest of the test playing nations. Not that it matters but I'd say India and South Africa at the moment both home and away would be a great series. I don't rate England and Australia in sub continent conditions.

I presume you are referring to the Chennai 387 chase Test series. Wasn't tht a two test series that we won 1 - zip ? :hmmmm2: If I remember correctly, at that time, Dhoni had 4 or 5 consecutive test wins as a test captain after he took over from anil kumble. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/7505415.stm

11 points is some lead. People need to stop being jealous of India's cricketing and financial muscle. We beat Sri Lanka with a 2nd rate bowling attack which might best play for the Board President's XI. We came from 1-0 down, batted for our lives in the F1 test and comprehensively beat the Sri Lankans in the 3rd test. We've been doing a PHENOMENAL job in every series we've played in. We deserve to be No.1 and thats the end of the discussion.

Did we see any such article when Aussies lost vs India and SL in 2000-01 or when we drew vs the Aussies in Australia in 2003-04? Some people just canlt fathom the fact that we are no1 test side and are going to remain number 1 for the foreseeable future. The whiners probably where expecting us to lose vs SA and SL thus going to number 3-4 but as this hasn;t happened, what they do? Question the ranking system, our credentials etc..Boo to the doomsayers.

See, when South Africa and Australia are No.1 despite losing series, there is NOTHING wrong with the rankings and no one complains about the rankings. But when India has a close or poor series, everyone is seen jumping the gun on the issue of rankings. This jealously is really sickening. It is this close-minded approach which brings nations and their decent people to shame.

What a moronic argument. "Holding the Ashes"? Big ****ing deal, India thrashed Australia at home as well. Hell even a side as pathetic as Pakistan held Australia to a draw! "Won five Test matches in a row"? Against who exactly, Bangladesh and Pakistan, the minnows of Test cricket? Wow, what an amazing achievement! And if drawing in SA is a big deal, so is drawing in SL, a team which had won every home series in the last four years. In fact a bigger achievement than drawing in SA. On top of that England have lost home and away to India. They should stick to orgasming over winning a limited overs tournament after 35 years, because no matter how much they try to spin things, they are nothing special in Test cricket.

Yeah make them number 1, the ICC rankings will surely become transparent , logical and the best way to judge the best team in the world! Who cares about series losses in India, Australia, Sri lanka, West Indies( even BD won a series there)!!

I agree with this. South Africa has itslef to blame for not being #1. It cannot win in India, Cannot Win in SL. Drew the series against Eng at home, Lost to Aus -- I mean come on! It is far too inconsistent! Aus on the other hand. Oh well -- How the feck can u lost to Pakis? Gimme a break. I am pretty sure at this point of time -- they cannot win in India, SL and Eng. Lose to Pakis on the road.

[ Thread Split] India's #1 rank in Test Matches / ICC Rankings ? After South Africa, BCCI Trying to Persuade Australia to Play Tests instead of ODIs http://www.crickblog.com/entry/after-south-africa-bcci-trying-to-persuade-australia-to-play-tests-instead-of-odis/ India-South Africa Test series to commence on Feb 6 http://cricket.rediff.com/report/2010/jan/15/bcci-announces-dates-for-south-africa-series.htm http://www.itsonlycricket.com/entry/734/ 2009 http://www.itsonlycricket.com/entry/1296/ 2010 Between the series in NZ and the home series in SL in 2009 there was 8 month gap without a test being played. Yeah, but they did play the IPL and quite magically an Indian side won it. India in order to retain the dubious No.1 team tag had to persuade the SA board to play 2 tests. Also in 2010, India had only 5 tests scheduled 2 against Bang. which is a sham, 3 against NZ in India, 3 in SA. Again in the danger of losing the No.1 spot BCCI persuaded CA. Oh and did I say that BCCI has proposed to cancel a test against NZ for couple of ODIs. Know the facts before you understand what should make sense. Btw do you have anything more to bring to the table ? How is IPL helpiing Indian cricket? I am not a hate monger, but I haven't seen any credible arguments for it. And when you say last 1 year? starting from .... to ....

Why exactly is the No.1 tag dubious? So what exactly is your problem? Are you saying we are playing enough tests or not? If the Board organises tests you say they organised tests in a year of ODI world cup, if they cancel tests to schedule extra ODIs in a World Cup year, you complain about that too? What exactly do you want them to do? er..31 Aug 2009 to 31 Aug 2010. I believe that would be the last one year.

Why is it dubious? Because India is not No.1 side atleast not my mind. I will see if I an post a blog I had written some time back on this, but I am not one of those who takes great pride in it. We are maybe a top 4 side with at the moment the best batting line up in the world. Well I have started on a "ranting" note on ICF so I wouldn't want to carry it too long, but imo BCCI has sold Indian cricket, IPL is just by product. Current SL series is a great egs. Why are we there? What are we trying to achieve? Just to ensure Slb votes and get them out of bankruptcy will you keep making your players play cricket matches. Still better than playing champions league I suppose, atleast we know our bench strength or lack of it. What I want is priority for test cricket in this country? And that means not only in terms of schedule ( not bang.) but also in terms of quality of grounds and pitches. Actually I could write a 100 pg blog on what I want or what is wrong. You, fellow gunner fan, tell me, are you happy with the state of affairs, the BCCI or IPL?

u are most stupid person i have ever seen. we have been no 1 test side in world for last 9 months because we have not lost single series in past two years.dhoni won 10 test matches in just 16 matches under his captaincy(he is only behind dada and match fixer).IPL brought money and power to bcci and now bcci can show :finger: to racist ca and ecb.we are no 2 in odi in world.we have probably greatest batting line up of all time.i dont know why u are soo annoyed with team india or maybe you are just pretending of being indian. :finger::finger::finger:

Ravish, do you even know how the ICC rankings work? How would India lose the number 1 spot by not playing tests? In fact by playing tests against the stronger sides like SA, Aus, and SL (away) we are more prone to losing the number 1 spot.

Well with your IQ, you can be unarmed and still be dangerous. Maybe you should change your ID to Fredo_Corelone or better still Luca Brasi. Nothing you put up is worth replying. Thanks for questioning my nationality. Lets just say like to think for myself. I love Indian cricket with every inch of my body. Which is why it hurts when things are not right. Although, as I said, this has been the best decade.

Here comes another "They maybe #1 by a mathematically defined set of ranking system which is the same since the ranking system started' date=' BUT NOT IN MY MIND!!!!!!!111OMG LOOK AT ME!!!!"[/quote'] Forget the rankings, ask yourself, Is India the best test team in the world right now ? I think India is very competitive and can beat anyone on its day but far from best. It doesn't have the bowlers.
