If anyone wants to know how to encrypt their email or instant messaging conversations then let me know. The 'World's biggest democracy' is quickly turning into the world's biggest Police State. Obviously we have to do this or the Pakis and/or Jihadis will come over and drop and an atomic bomb on us.

People with nothing to hide need not worry.If the govt misuses it...there are ways to address the issues.People were living without this oversensitive need for secrecy till now...they can do it for somemore time till the people find a solution for the security threat.

Exactly. People who have nothing to hide need not worry. But even if something like this helps in tracking down a terrorist faster, or even proving in court that someone has these intentions, its a welcome step. Right to privacy vivacy is the least of your concerns when your city is attacked and you end up losing close friends/family. Thats when you get the real picture. As it is, where do you get privacy in India anyways..

I seriously doubt the Indian government has the technology in place to be able to monitor every seemingly random conversation and figure out what is relevant and what is not. You need some very sophisticated hardware and software to be able to do that. On top of that, I am sure the terrorists will talk in some low-tech coded language. "Hi honey, how about dinner tonight" might mean "1 hour to the first blast". This project will fill some politicians pockets and do nothing more than that. They are just trying to ape the NSA.

You're missing the point here ... the title says "Indian Goverment wants to be able to spy on all telephone and VOIP communications". This does not mean they will hire 10 million people to go through voice calls, emails, messages, drafts etc every day. They just need the legal basis to monitor a suspect's digital footprint.
