enough with the slap on the wrists. its time to send out a strong message to future generations of paki cricketers and members of their current team who werent involved in any of this. not only that, its time to send a message to cricketers from all countries. its not just paki cricket at stake here, the reputation of the game is at stake. people are going to watch matches and question everything that is going on. cricket will become like track and field - where everytime u see a guy winning races comfortably, u can't help but wonder whether he is on something. this was a sport where the best gold medalists got caught as dope cheats - think of marion jones, maurice greene, ben johnson. all banned for life, all stripped of their medals and living the rest of their lives in disgrace. nobody will even go near them, and there is no respect left. thats the kind of treatment these match fixers need. but to send out a really powerful message, as signal of intent - the entire team should be banned for a year. maybe even more. yes, its unfair to punish those that werent involved for the actions of a few (in this case, 7, most of their team anyway) but this is needed for 2 reasons: 1. paki cricket has to get its house in order. this gives them the time to do that. clean up the administration, cut down on illegal betting, establish rules for cricketers and set up ways to watch them when they are on tour. do whatever they need to do 2. send out the message that this kind of stuff has big time consquences that can threaten a country's participation in the sport. thats a pretty heavy consequence, and will stop cricketers in other countries from doing similar things last time this sort of thing happened was in 2000. everyone knows azhar, cronje, were banned for life. and lots of cricketers got banned for years. the same punishment CANNOT be handed out again. people obviously never got the message cos here we are with this big mess today. its time to crack the whip and make sure they get the message. ban pakistan for at least a year. for the good of cricket, for the good of the game and its reputation.

Malcolm Speed was alluding to a ban from international cricket, a "rest" as he called it. If they were banned say, would anyone care ? On the financial front, no one wants to host them because huge losses are incurred for the hosting board (England for example) and places like Dubai/Sharjah are out of the question. Putting that aside, why would you want to play them anyway ? Every run you score, every wicket you take, did you earn it or were they simply gifted away ? Mazheed has been involved in match fixing for the last 2.5 years. In that time, some 80 odd tests and ODI's have been played. How many matches have been fixed that we don't know about. I say, ban them. Enough is enough, there is a limit to tolerance.

the financial point of view isnt worth discussing here. nobody cares about the money its about coming down HARD on match fixing by making the consequences as scary as possible. banning the team for a year would be a pretty tough consequence and i dont think any cricketer will think about doing stupid **** when they knew how big the consequences can be.

One sentence - Not gonna happen. You're trying to indite an entire country for the actions of a few individuals. Its not as if the every single cricketer in Pakistan, including all of their FC cricketers, are guilty of match-fixing. If it comes to them fielding all their U-19 players for the senior team, they'll rather do that than accept a year's ban. Thats like the PCB implicitly accepting 'Yea, we're a hopeless bunch of compulsive cheats. The only way you're going to stop us from cheating is to not allow us to play at all...' ICC cares enough about the money to not ban Pak since the WC is just a few months away. They could ban them for 6 months such that the ban is lifted before the WC, but no way would ICC ban Pak or any of the top 9 teams from the WC. Pak hardly brings any money to the table but the WC rights are sold on the promise of having all the top nations in the world.

Fully agree with M_P. This is like the nth time they are being caught red handed, so why not set an example? The incompetent board and management has been caught by balls, so unless ICC do what it did to Zimbocks, this is not simply gonna stop.

I dont think a one year ban would do much harm. Thats almost like an incentive to indulge in more fixing. Life ban for all players involved would be good enough. Future Pakistani younsters have to understand how much a potential super star like Aamer has lost for a few thousand pounds. The penalty has to be disproportionate to the crime for it to be a threat & i think a life ban on players does just that.

Players would sure get life bans, we're talking about what can be done besides that, right?

Dont go by what common sense suggests. You only have to look at the Shoaib-Asif drug scandal for an example. PCB (& its lawyers) cleverly exploited all the loopholes possible to let these thugs back in again. Even if ICC life bans players, if lawyers get involved, what seems common sense could turn into a judicial procedure and then strange things can happen. Also, banning Pakistan as a cricketing nation is prolly unfair if only a few players are involved in this thing. OTOH, if it is proven that their management is also involved, then i would think banning them from playing cricket would be fair.

It's quite evident that the management is either involved or damn incompetent. Now let's not single out this incident, the whole PCB circus is a goddamn joke. So I don't think they're gonna learn unless they are suspended atleast. So let's not talk about being fair here. I agree, this may not be as easy as we speak, but this is still the only solution if ICC gives a damn about cricket..

Someone really needs to ask ICC what their ACSU the anti corruption unit has been doing? A news channel can easily entrap the agents and the players BUT the ACSU has been sound sleep and says "it has been keeping a close watch " on the players.
