I am sure Ajit Agarkar will be in the contention for a spot in the all time ODI 11 as well.Forced into a semi retirement at the age of 30 when he was still better than most other Indian pacers!! One of our fittest ODI cricketers and best fielders in the outfield besides of course an awesome strike rate in ODIs. Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly, Yuvraj, Dravid, Dhoni, Kapil, Agarkar, Kumble, Srinath, Zaheer, 12th man: Kaif

But, for an ODI XI there is really no need to look beyond Kapil - just do a man to man analysis of the Indian team with any top 4-5 teams in the '83 WC.

Kapil and Ganguly have been successful captains for India. One is a world cup winning one, while under the other the team did very well. But if you look at the ability to be innovative and quickly come up with strategies on field then these two wouldn't be at the top of the table. Ganguly, too me, comes across as selfish too. I can't forget how he ran out Tendulkar in the CT2000 final. Many others would have sacrificed their wkt. Who can forget how he elected to field first in WC2003 final. From my X1, I would be b/w either Gavaskar or Kumble.

I would definitely play Azharuddin in an all time Indian XI, arguably our best middle order ODI batsman, most likely in place of Gavaskar and move Ganguly to number 3 and Sehwag would open with Tendulkar. Dravid hardly batted at number 3 in ODIs, so will play him at number 5. Also, I wouldn't play 5 bowlers, kind of redundant in ODIs, rather play Yuvraj. Sehwag Tendulkar Ganguly Azharuddin Dravid Yuvraj Dhoni Kapil Kumble Srinath Zaheer.

i remember gavaskar making 98 in a successful run chase of about 300 in the mid eighties in the west indies (i believe at that time the highest successful run chase in a ODI) - and of course he led india to the world championship of cricket tournament in australia and rounded off his career with a flurry of runs in the 1987 World Cup. So yes - there is a case for him but I would still have India's most successful one day opening partnership, Tendulkar and Ganguly. Though for sentimental reasons I would have liked to give a spot to the late and great Mushtaq Ali. And what about Sehwag - in the one day team with an average of 31? Not sure about that......... Tendulkar Ganguly Mohinder Amarnath CK Nayudu (captain, obviously, India's first ever captain) Polly Umrigar Lala Amarnath Vinoo Mankad Dhoni Kapil Dev Amar Singh (to partner Nissar - also a brutal batsman in the Kapil mould) Mo Nissar (for some outright pace)

Somehow Sehwags average of 31 for an opener does not impress. But then again, I cant think of anyone to replace him I really like Outsider's team, but there is no way I would include Azhar in any all time XI's. Sehwag Tendulkar Ravi Shastri/Sidhu/Vengsarkar/Srikkant Ganguly Dravid Yuvraj Dhoni Kapil Kumble Srinath Zaheer.

At his peak, which has been the past few years, he has been superb.

We are talking about all time XI here, so overall performance must be considered. Anyways he's a far better ODI batsman than what his average suggests.

Why must ovverall performance be considered? Sehwag's peak for ODI batting has been the past three or four years. Heck, no one judges Waqar on his later career when he bowled 80mph, so why judge Sehwag in his early career when he lacked the consistency he has now.

Sehwag doesn't average 31. He averages 35, which is the same as Gilchrist at a significantly better strike rate than Gilchrist. Yes, Gilchrist used to double up as a keeper, but would have made the side purely as a batsman too. And Sehwag's part time bowling is not too shabby at all.

I have Sehwag in my XI as well, but just saying that last 3 years good perfo alone doesn't warrant a place in the all time XI.
